DURHAM – Duke University Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White has been named one of 43 individuals across professional and college sports to the 2021 Leader in Diversity and Inclusive Hiring list by Sports Business Journal (SBJ).
SBJ is recognizing the men and women across the sports landscape who have led by example in the hiring decisions and efforts they have made to advance the sports business careers of women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
White, who is set to retire in August after 47 years in college and 13 years at Duke, possess a resume that is unmatched in college athletics. In addition to the championship pedigree that he has fostered with eight NCAA championships under his leadership at Duke, he will leave with an impressive record of diverse hiring and a vast network of executives and coaches who have gone on to excel at other colleges and universities.
On his current staff at Duke, there are 10 women and four people of color among 22 positions at the senior deputy, senior associate, associate, assistant AD or executive director level. Twenty-four former aides have become athletic directors, including Penn State's Sandy Barbour, Auburn's Allen Greene, Stanford's Bernard Muir, Austin Peay's Gerald Harrison, Prairie View A&M's Donald Reed and Bradley's Chris Reynolds.
At all five of the Division I athletic departments White has led – Duke, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Tulane and Maine, he hired the first ethnic minority head coach at that school.
White is currently a member of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) Board of Directors and has served in nearly every major leadership role in intercollegiate athletics, including as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee.
