CARY – Ian Siebers shattered the Duke freshman tournament scoring record, shooting 13-under par at the Stitch Intercollegiate to lead the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish on Saturday at MacGregor Downs GC in Cary.
Siebers carded an opening 71 Friday, then shot back-to-back career low rounds of six-under 66 in rounds two and three to post his career-best finish of tied for third. The freshman from Bellevue, Wash., has finished in the top 30 in each of his seven tournaments this season.
In posting the lowest tournament score by a Duke freshman on record, Siebers had just two blemishes over his 54 holes at MacGregor Downs, bogeying the opening hole on Friday and double bogeying the par-3 12th in Saturday's final round. Siebers carded 14 birdies and eagled the par-5 fifth in the final round.
"I didn't get off to a great start in the first round but was able to battle back strong and make a bunch of birdies in the next two rounds to climb up the leaderboard," Siebers said. "It feels great to set the Duke freshman 54 hole scoring record, as it is the result of a lot of hard work and patience throughout the semester. This is certainly a step in the right direction for me, and I look forward to continuing my strong play with the team in ACCs and beyond."
Siebers' 13-under 203 tops the previous 54-hole record by a Duke freshman of 9-under 204 by
Michael Schachner at the 2005 NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Tennessee. It also stands as the third lowest tournament score by a Blue Devil all-time, trailing a pair of 16-under cards by
Alex Smalley and
Adrien Pendaries, each coming in the 2018-19 season.
As a team, the Blue Devils were 12-under 276 in Saturday's final round, which included a strong finish from Pendaries, who posted a 6-under 66 to charge 21 spot up the leaderboard into a tie for 27th finish at 3-under 213.
Duke shot 23-under as a team for the tournament to finish sixth in the 12-team field -- the 23-under score marking the sixth-best score to par in team history. The host NC State Wolfpack won the tournament at 51-under par, followed by Notre Dame (-39), East Tennessee State (-38), Virginia Tech (-34), Campbell (-25) and Duke (-23) in the top half of the standings.
Campbell's Pontus Nyholm was the individual medalist at 17-under par for a three-stroke victory.
