NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 14 Duke field hockey team tried to rally from a two-goal deficit, but it ultimately fell short at No. 10 Boston College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey Complex.
The Blue Devils conclude their 2020-21 campaign with a 4-12 overall mark, including a 2-5 record in the spring, while the Eagles improved to 9-5.
Boston College registered two straight goals, beginning with a score from Caroline McGovern before the end of the first quarter at the 13:11 minute mark. Olivia Hanh then gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 46th minute.
Playing in her first game of the spring, junior
Leah Crouse cut Boston College's lead to 2-1 following a tally 36 seconds later at 46:25. Graduate student
Eva Nunnink dribbled into the circle and sent a look inside. It was touched by senior
Libby Thompson before Crouse tapped it in for her second goal of the season.
The Blue Devils looked to add to their attack in the final minutes of play as they emptied the goal with three and half minutes left in the contest. Juniors
Olivia Sahaydak and
Caroline Hanan both tallied shots in the last minute of action, but Duke couldn't break through.
The Blue Devils took 13 shots in the match, edging the Eagles' 11, and was led by freshman
Darcy Bourne and Nunnink with three each. Rookie
Piper Hampsch made a game-high five saves in 56:27 minutes in the cage.
