DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's soccer team will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the 26th time in program history, as the Blue Devils received the No. 9 overall seed and will open play in the second round on Saturday, May 1 at 12 p.m. in Greenville, N.C.
Duke will face the winner of Arizona State and Siena, whose first-round match is set for Wednesday, April 28 at 12 p.m.
"I'm ecstatic for the players," said head coach
Robbie Church. "We've been here since July. We had never come in so early and we had about six weeks before we started our fall season, and then we had 13 games in there. Then, we had a two-month break, which was so unusual, and then we came back and started again at the end of January. The players have worked so hard, and it's been tough. There's times you don't know if there's games, you don't know if you can practice, who is going to get contact traced if anybody has COVID – there's so much that they had to deal with. For us to be the No. 9 seed and dealing with all of the stuff that we had to deal with this year, I'm just really proud of the players and really proud of the staff."
In an effort to minimize travel and condense the overall time to conduct the championships, the entirety of the 48-team tournament will be played in the state of North Carolina. Duke's match on May 1 will be held at Johnson Stadium on the campus of East Carolina University. Other first and second round sites include Buies Creek, Cary, Greensboro, Matthews, Wilmington and Wilson.
The Blue Devils bring a 10-5-3 overall record into the NCAA Tournament. Duke went 7-4-2 during the fall portion of the season, including a 4-2-2 mark in ACC play, before falling to top-ranked Florida State in the conference semifinals. With the NCAA Tournament postponed from the fall of 2020 to the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke completed a five-match slate over the last six weeks, accumulating a 3-1-1 record.
With the selection, the Blue Devils have now made the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in the last 18 seasons, and earn a top-16 national seed for the fifth time in the last six years. Duke has posted a 40-22-10 record in 72 tournament games all-time, with four College Cup appearances – 1992, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
Siena will be making its third all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2015. The Saints did not compete during the fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but have put together an impressive 6-0-2 mark in eight matches over March and April. On Friday, April 16, Siena defeated Monmouth on penalty kicks to capture the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship.
Arizona State enters the tournament with an 8-5-2 record, receiving one of 19 at-large bids in the 48-team field. The Sun Devils return to the postseason for the first time since 2014 and the eighth time in program history. They have notched a pair of marquee victories this spring, defeating No. 3 UCLA on March 26 and defending national champion Stanford on April 4.
"It's exciting, because you don't know who you'll play," said Church. "It's a PAC-12 team in Arizona State, which is one of the top conferences in the country. Siena, just glancing at their body of work, they've had an unbelievable year. They've done great and are one of the few undefeated teams that are still out there. It should be a great game in the first round. We're trying to tidy ourselves up and get better. It's a little difficult because we have two different styles of teams, but we'll start to integrate playing against them this week."
The winner of Duke's second-round matchup will face either eighth-seeded Southern California (7-3-3), Ole Miss (10-5-0) or Bowling Green (6-1-0). ACC champion Florida State (11-0-0) is the region's No. 1 seed, while 16th-seeded Vanderbilt (9-5-1) also receives a first-round bye.
All games from the start of the third round through the national championship will be played at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
