Michael Sowers has been named one of the five finalists for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Friday. The award is presented annually to the top men and women's lacrosse players.
A native of Dresher, Pa., this is Sowers' second time being a finalist for the prestigious award, earning recognition in 2019 as a junior at Princeton.
Sowers becomes the ninth Blue Devil to earn the distinction of being a Tewaaraton Award finalist. Two Blue Devils have won the award –
Matt Danowski (2007) and
Ned Crotty (2010). The other four finalists are Jared Bernhardt (Maryland), Jake Carraway (Georgetown), Chris Gray (North Carolina), Pat Kavanagh (Notre Dame),
A three-time ACC Offensive Player of the Week honoree, Sowers headlines the Duke attack with 30 goals and 37 assists for 67 points. His 37 assists currently rank ninth in Duke single-season history. In his previous three outings, the veteran attackman has eight goals and seven assists for 15 points. Overall, Sowers has scored five-plus points in nine games, including six against Syracuse and five in the win over Notre Dame. He averaged 3.83 points per game to help Duke earn a share of the ACC title and landed him on the 2021 All-ACC Team.
Joining the Blue Devils after four seasons at Princeton, Sowers has scored at least one point in all 61 games of his career and has 369 for his career. He currently ranks third in NCAA history in career points and fourth in career assists (218).
