SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The second-ranked Duke women's golf team opened action at the NCAA Championship Friday by carding a 4-over-par, 292, and is tied for fourth. The Blue Devils are only three shots off the lead at the 6,399-yard, par 72 Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Duke started its day on the back nine in the first round and made the turn at 1-under-par as a team. The Blue Devils led shortly after making the turn with a 2-under-par ledger, but dropped several shots as the winds started gusting. Duke added a few birdies on the way in to close strong under challenging conditions.
Going out in the morning on the opening day, Texas (289) and Oregon (290) are currently first and second, respectively, while Stanford (291), Arizona (292), Kent State (292), Duke (292), Wake Forest (292), LSU (296), Ole Miss (296) and Oklahoma State (297) round out the top 10.
Senior
Jaravee Boonchant paced the Blue Devils Friday with an even-par, 72, and is tied for fifth. She is only three shots behind first round leader Rachel Heck of Stanford, who signed for a 3-under-par, 69.
Boonchant, who hails from Bangkok, Thailand, opened the day with six straight pars, before suffering a bogey on the par-3 16th. She sank an 8-foot birdie on No. 18 to make the turn at even par. Boonchant birdied her second straight on the 380-yard, par-4 first hole as she hit a half shot 7-iron from 145 yards to four feet and drained the putt to get to 1-under-par. She could not get up-and-down for par on No. 3, but came back to tap-in for birdie on the par-5 fourth. Boonchant suffered her third bogey of the day on No. 5 and then closed with four pars to finish with her fourth career round of even or under par in NCAA action. She hit 13 fairways, 12 greens and rolled 30 putts on the day.
Going out first for the Blue Devils on Friday, freshman
Phoebe Brinker was solid in her first NCAA Championship appearance. She turned in eight straight pars to kick off her round, before tapping in for birdie on the par-5 18th to make the turn at 1-under. Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del., suffered a bogey on No. 1, but went back to the red with a short birdie on the par-5 fourth hole. She had bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6, but finished with three pars to close her day with a 1-over, 73, and is tied for 19th. Brinker hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.
Also collecting a 1-over, 73, in round one, sophomore
Erica Shepherd is tied for 19th in her first NCAA action. Just as she opened her collegiate career with a birdie as a rookie, Shepherd rolled in a 4-foot birdie on her first NCAA hole to start her day at 1-under-par. She added five consecutive pars, before missing the green on the par-3 16th and suffering a bogey. Shepherd made the turn at even par, 36.
A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd had back-to-back 3-putt bogeys on No. 2 and No. 3 to fall to 2-over for the day. She would then go on to birdie three out of her next five holes to get back to even par. Shepherd sank a 6-foot birdie on No. 4, 12-footer on No. 6 and another 12-footer on No. 8. She turned in an outstanding par on the par-5 seventh as she had to take an unplayable off the tee, but then was able to get up-and-down from short of the green. Shepherd bogied No. 9 to close the day with a 73. She hit 12 greens and had 32 putts on the day.
Junior
Gina Kim collected a 2-over-par, 74 on Friday and is tied for 38th. She birdied her first hole and would go on to make the turn at even-par with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., had a rough opening of the back nine with three bogeys over a span of four holes. She was able to turn it around and close strong with a birdie on No. 5 and then added her fourth birdie of the day on the par-5 seventh. Kim went for the green in two and the ball ended up past the green, but the 2021 ACC Individual Champion had a great chip to within a foot for birdie.
Also making her NCAA Championship debut was freshman
Anne Chen. A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen turned in a 76 on Friday, after being limited to only one birdie. Chen had bogeys on No. 10 and No. 18, while posting seven pars on her opening nine holes. She collected a 36-foot birdie on the 380-yard, par-4 No. 1 hole to get back to 1-over for the day. Chen closed the afternoon with three bogeys and five pars to finish with a 76. She hit 10 fairways, 12 greens and had 34 putts.
As a team, the Blue Devils rolled 14 birdies, which ranked tied for third overall. Both Kim and Shepherd's four birdies ranked tied for second, individually.
Duke will have a quick turnaround for the second round as the Blue Devils will tee off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 22 along with South Carolina and LSU.
The top 15 teams following 54 holes will advance to the final round of stroke play on Monday, May 24.
The Golf Channel will feature extensive coverage of the NCAA Championship beginning Monday, May 24 with 5-9 p.m. (ET) action. On Tuesday for match play, the coverage will be from 12-2:30 p.m., and 5-9 p.m. Wednesday's championship will be aired from 5-9 p.m.
