RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 21 Duke plated six runs in the final two innings to top NC State, 12-7, and secure the series sweep at the Dail Softball Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (39-10, 26-10) picked up their fifth sweep to close out the 2021 conference slate, while the Wolfpack fell to 25-24, 15-22.
Juniors
Deja Davis and
Kristina Foreman got the job done at the plate, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. Foreman tallied a team-high four RBIs and hit a career-high two home runs to break the single-season record with 10 on the year.
In the circle, junior
Shelby Walters (16-3) recorded her 16th victory, throwing three innings in which she let up three hits and earned four strikeouts. Senior
Peyton St. George started the game and tossed four frames, allowing seven runs, four walks and striking out nine.
On the first pitch of the ballgame, Davis hit a leadoff single through the right side and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Gisele Tapia, but NC State retired the next two Blue Devils to keep Duke off the board. St. George struck out the first two Wolfpack batters and got out of a bases-loaded jam with her third punchout to keep the first inning scoreless.
The Blue Devils scored five runs in the second, beginning with Foreman who blasted her third homer of the series well over the wall in left field. Duke brought in runs on an RBI single up the middle by Davis and freshman
Kelly Torres was called safe at home on a fielder's choice from Tapia. The final two runs were brought in by a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch to take a 5-0 lead.
NC State answered with a pair of two-run home runs in the bottom of the second and third frames, cutting Duke's lead to 5-4.
In the fifth, senior
Jameson Kavel made her way around the bases with a walk, stolen base and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Foreman. She gave Duke a 6-4 lead with heads up baserunning, scoring on a fielder's choice by classmate
Rachel Crabtree. The Wolfpack knotted the game at 6-6 in the home half with their third two-run home run of the contest and took the lead on a play at the plate.
Duke took back the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits as Foreman crushed her second long ball of the day with a three-run shot to right center to make it a 10-7 game. With the home run, Foreman garnered the first multi-home run game of her career.
The Blue Devils added two more runs in the seventh for a final score of 12-7. Torres took a base as she was hit by a pitch and junior
Kyla Morris picked up her second hit of the day. The duo was brought home on Davis' two-run triple down the right field line, tying the single-season triples record at six.
Duke returns to action later this week at the ACC Tournament in Louisville, Ky. Earning the No. 3 seed, the Blue Devils' will face six-seeded Louisville Thursday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
