DURHAM, N.C. – Golfweek has announced its All-America selections for the 2020-21 campaign with four Duke women's golfers earning accolades –
Gina Kim,
Erica Shepherd,
Jaravee Boonchant and
Phoebe Brinker.
Kim, Shepherd and Boonchant all earned second team honors, while Brinker was named honorable mention. Duke led all schools with four All-America selections.
A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim was one of the hottest golfers in the nation to conclude the season, She placed in the top 11 of her final four stroke play events, including a tied for fifth finish at the NCAA Championship with rounds of 74, 67, 72 and 73 for a 2-under, 286. She became the fourth Blue Devil to notch back-to-back top-10 finishes in the championship in their first two appearances joining Celine Boutier, Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee. Kim turned in a tied for 10th finish in 2019 as a rookie.
Kim earned All-ACC recognition for the second time in her career, while also claiming the ACC Individual Championship with rounds of 68, 69 and 69 for a 10-under-par, 206. With 11 rounds of even or under par on the year and a career-best 72.11 stroke average, Kim led Duke in both categories. Her five rounds in the 60s also led the Blue Devils.
A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant missed the first two tournaments of the spring due to COVID-19 travel restrictions from her home country. Once she returned, she competed in four stroke play tournaments and two match play events for Duke. She stepped in and fired an 8-under-par, 208, in her first tournament back as she finished tied for sixth. Boonchant posted a 72.23 stroke average on the season and did not finish lower than tied for 20th in all four stroke play events.
She concluded her Duke career with a 71.93 stroke average to rank third on the Blue Devil all-time record charts. Boonchant also ranked tied for fifth in even or under-par rounds (54), tied for seventh in rounds in the 60s (15) and tied for seventh in eagles (6).
Shepherd was tabbed as an All-American for the first time in her career, after having a breakout sophomore campaign with the Blue Devils. She totaled a 72.42 stroke average to go along with four top-13 finishes. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., registered her first collegiate victory at the Gamecock Intercollegiate against a stacked field with rounds of 69, 70 and 70 for a 7-under, 209. She also placed tied for eighth at the ACC Championship, which included a second round with a 5-under, 67. Shepherd finished the season ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek individual rankings and ranked second on the team with nine rounds of even or under par.
Brinker, a product of Wilmington, Del., closed her rookie campaign with a bang as she carded rounds of 73, 70, 72 and 71 to place tied for fifth at the NCAA Championship with a 2-under-par ledger. She became just the sixth Blue Devil rookie to finish in the top-5 of the NCAA Championship. Brinker also placed tied for second at the Valspar Augusta Invitational and tied for third at the Gamecock Intercollegiate. In the Valspar, Brinker collected a Duke freshman record lowest 18-hole score with an 8-under, 64, and her 10-under 54-hole score tied a freshman record and was the fifth-lowest in school history. She closed the year with a 73.26 stroke average.
The four Blue Devils helped guide Duke to the 2021 ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship semifinals in Arizona. Duke collected victories at the Gamecock Intercollegiate, Cavalier Match Play and ACC Championship. The Blue Devils also finished the regular season ranked No. 1 nationally in the Golfweek ledger.
