DURHAM, N.C. – After helping the Duke women's tennis program reach the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, senior
Kelly Chen has announced that she will use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic and join the team for the 2021-22 campaign.
"Kelly has been a tremendous asset to not only our program, but to the entire Duke community since the moment she stepped on campus," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "We could not be happier that she has decided to utilize her fifth year here at Duke. We are looking forward to her leadership on and off the court as we continue to pursue another national championship."
It was another historic season for Chen, who has steadily risen up the all-time rankings in almost every category in program history. Chen became just the third Blue Devil in program history to be named a four-time ITA All-American, joining Amanda Johnson (2001-04) and Vanessa Webb (1996-99) in the elite club. The Cerritos, Calif., native also was named to her third All-ACC list, selected to the Second Team.
"I'm definitely excited to come back," said Chen. "I would like to thank the coaches and Duke Athletics for offering me an extra year and I intend to cherish the time Duke, whether it would be on or off the court. Duke women's tennis has been close to winning NCAA's several times and I think that this coming season is our time to win it."
Chen went 13-13 in singles this past year, facing 15 ranked opponents while playing the number one position. In doubles with junior
Georgia Drummy at the third spot in the lineup, the duo went 16-6 overall. Chen herself went 18-8 in doubles, adding two more wins with senior
Ema Lazic.
With her two singles victories at the NCAA Singles Championship, Chen moved to 109-36 in her collegiate career, moving into a tie for 17th with Wendy Fix in the all-time Duke rankings. She could become just the sixth Blue Devil in program history to reach 125 singles victories with the extra season. Chen now also has 30 career ACC singles victories, good for seventh in program history.
