DURHAM – Duke women's soccer head coach
Robbie Church announced the Blue Devils' schedule for the 2021 season on Thursday.
The 2021 campaign marks the 34th season in program history and features 17 regular season matches. Duke will face seven opponents that participated in the NCAA Tournament this past spring, including three of the four teams that advanced to the College Cup.
The Blue Devils will play 12 of their regular season contests within the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium, and will travel to play six opponents on the road. The ACC Tournament is set to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 5 at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
Duke will open the fall with a pair of exhibition matches, beginning at Koskinen against Georgia on Friday, Aug. 10. The Blue Devils will then head to Clemson, S.C., to take on the ACC rival Tigers on Friday, Aug. 13.
Regular season action kicks off with the 2021 Carolina Nike Classic, which features games on Thursday, Aug. 19 and Sunday, Aug. 22. Both of Duke's matches in the event will be played at Koskinen Stadium, where the Blue Devils face a pair of NCAA Tournament participants in Arkansas and Washington.
Duke will remain at home for a Thursday night match against Western Carolina on Aug. 26, before the team departs for Nashville, Tenn., for a road test against Vanderbilt on Sunday, Aug. 29. The Blue Devils and Commodores saw each other two months ago in Durham, battling to a 0-0 draw in the final game of the regular season on April 11.
The first weekend of September will feature the 2021 Duke Nike Classic, with the Blue Devils taking on perennial contender Stanford at Koskinen on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. ET.
Duke opens up ACC play with three consecutive road matches, beginning with the 49th installment of the Tobacco Road Rivalry on Saturday, Sept. 18, when the Blue Devils face North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Duke then heads to Charlottesville, Va., for a Sept. 23 date with NCAA semifinalist Virginia, before wrapping up the road swing against Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 26.
The Blue Devils will play seven matches in October, including five home contests – Syracuse (Oct. 2), NC State (Oct. 7), Pittsburgh (Oct. 10), Notre Dame (Oct. 21) and Florida State (Oct. 24). Duke travels to Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 15, and wrap up the regular season at Louisville on Thursday, Oct. 28.
Church's squad will aim to carry over the momentum from a 2020-21 season that saw the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh time in the last 10 years. Duke finished the season with a 12-5-4 record and a national ranking of No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. During an unprecedented fall season in which Duke had to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Devils pieced together a 4-2-2 mark in ACC play, before advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament in November.
STRONG COMPETITION
- Seven of Duke's opponents are coming off an appearance in the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament, including six teams that advanced to the Round of 16, four teams that played in the Quarterfinals and three teams that ended the season in the College Cup.
- Duke is also slated to face three schools that won a conference title in 2020-21 – Arkansas (SEC regular season), Vanderbilt (SEC tournament) and Florida State (ACC regular season & tournament).
- The Blue Devils will take on six teams that ended the 2020-21 season ranked in the United Soccer Coaches national poll – Florida State (No. 2), North Carolina (No. 3), Virginia (No. 4), Arkansas (No. 12), Washington (No. 15) and Vanderbilt (No. 21).
- Stanford, who Duke will play on Sept. 2 in Durham, has won three national championships in the past decade. On nine occasions since 2010, the Cardinal have ended a season ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top 10.
THREE ROAD MATCHES TO OPEN ACC PLAY
- Duke will hit the road at the start of conference play with three consecutive matches away from Koskinen Stadium, facing North Carolina on Sept. 18, Virginia on Sept. 23 and Virginia Tech on Sept. 26.
- It marks the third time in program history that the Blue Devils open ACC play with three straight road matches. The two previous such seasons were 1998 and 2014, with Duke going 0-3 and 2-1, respectively, on those swings.
FAMILIAR FOES
- The 2021 schedule features only one opponent that the Blue Devils have never played before this season – East Carolina.
- Duke hosts the Pirates at Koskinen on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
- On the flip side, the Blue Devils will take on nine teams that they have played against eight or more times in program history.
