DURHAM, N.C. – With the 51st season in program history quickly approaching, head coach
Jolene Nagel and the Duke volleyball program are excited to announce the 2021 schedule.
The 29-match regular season slate runs from August to November and features six matches against opponents who participated in the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament.
"We're excited to release our 2021 volleyball schedule," Nagel said. "In such an unprecedented competition year due to COVID-19 and playing a spring season in 2021, we welcome the opportunity to get back to a traditional fall schedule. Our team is grateful for what Duke has provided for our team in order to compete safely in the fall of '20 and the spring of '21. As a result, we were able to continue to grow and develop during a very uncertain time and we're excited to get on the court for the '21 season."
The Blue Devils kick off the 2021 season on the road in Conway, S.C., at the Coastal Carolina Invitational against the host Chanticleers and Iowa. Duke will return to Durham to start home competition with Elon on Tuesday, Aug. 31. In all, Nagel's squad will host 16 matches in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke's scheduled to host two tournaments with the Duke Invitational Sept. 3-4 and will travel to Michigan to play Michigan and Michigan State before returning home for the Duke Classic Sept. 17-18.
"This season we have tried to limit travel for our out of conference schedule, even though travel around the country and world begins to open," Nagel mentioned. "The spread of variants continues and we're fortunate that we can do this and still have a very competitive preseason schedule. Seeing opponents from multiple conferences and the luxury of hosting two tournaments allows for quality competition and minimal travel. It will be a packed four weeks of preseason matches that will definitely prepare us for the rigors of the ACC conference season."
With the completion of the non-conference slate, Duke will turn its attention to ACC action, beginning with Boston College and Syracuse the weekend of Sept. 24. The Blue Devils' schedule features a home-and-home series with Boston College, Louisville, North Carolina and Syracuse. Duke will see Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech exclusively at home and hits the road to face Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, Pittsburgh and Virginia.
The Blue Devils concluded the 2020-21 season 9-13 overall and went 7-10 in conference. In addition to five newcomers, Duke returns 11 letterwinners from this past season's squad, including All-ACC selections
Mackenzie Cole,
Ade Owokoniran and
Payton Schwantz.
"This past spring, our team gained great experience on the court competing in 12 matches and five of those went five sets and down to the wire," Nagel said. "I think competing in these close matches are going to pay dividends this fall for this team. This team kept competing throughout, stayed positive and picked themselves up after some hard-fought battles. They are more determined than ever to compete as a team again and be successful."
Duke Athletics announced that venues will return to full capacity during the upcoming academic year. Should state, local or campus regulations related to capacity, distancing and masking change prior to or during the season, operational policies at each venue could be altered. Those changes would be communicated via GoDuke.com and teams' social media accounts. Duke University encourages all fans to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine prior to attending events on campus.
