PINEHURST, N.C. — Duke rising senior
Gina Kim collected a pair of match play wins on Friday, en route to a semifinal appearance in the Pinehurst North & South Women's Amateur on course No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Kim, a product of Chapel Hill, N.C., will take on Allisen Corpuz Saturday morning at 7 a.m., in the semifinals for a chance to advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon.
In the morning against No. 17 seeded Addison Baggarly, Kim took an early, 2UP, lead through four holes, but Baggarly battled back to tie the match with wins on No. 5 and No. 6. Kim regained the lead on No. 8 with a par and would not trail for the next seven holes. With a par and birdie on No. 15 and No. 16, Baggarly took a 1UP lead. After both golfers parred No. 17, Kim needed to win the 18th to extend the match. She calmly birdied No. 18 to send it to extra holes and won the match in 19 holes.
Kim went back out on the course in the afternoon and faced ninth-seeded Jessica Spicer in the quarterfinals. Spicer won the second hole with a birdie to take a 1UP lead, but Kim evened the match with a par on No. 4. Another birdie for Spicer gave her the 1UP lead again on No. 5, but Kim sank a birdie on No. 7 to tie the match.
The two golfers tied the next seven holes, before Kim won No. 15 with a par to take a 1UP lead. Spicer once again answered and evened the match with a par on No. 17. Both Kim and Spicer parred No. 18 and the Blue Devil three-time All-America selection made a 4-footer for par on the 19th hole to move into the semifinals.
Along with Kim and Corpuz in the semifinals are Anna Morgan and Megan Schofill.
