DURHAM – Head coach
Jolene Nagel and the Duke volleyball program are excited to announce graduate
Payton Schwantz will remain with the squad for her fifth year of eligibility.
Schwantz elected to use her final year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19 and is currently enrolled in Duke's Fuqua School of Business.
"I am incredibly excited and feel really blessed," Schwantz said. "I'm really thankful to Coach for the relationship we've built over the years. The opportunity to go to grad school here is incredible. I couldn't be in a better situation."
The 5-11 outside hitter has been a mainstay in Duke's lineup the last four years, typically as a six-rotation player.
She has played in 376 sets and accumulated a whopping 1,025 kills, 818 digs, 100 blocks and 38 service aces to date. The Frisco, Texas native became the 26th Blue Devil to reach the 1,000-kill milestone in Duke's sweep over Boston College on March 22, 2021.
"This year, I want to be in the moment and stay present in everything I do," Schwantz said. "Even though it might be overwhelming at times, balancing school and volleyball, I want to make the most of every situation."
In the spring of 2021, Schwantz was named to the All-ACC Team and was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team following her rookie season as she became the first Duke freshman with 350-plus kills since Rachael Moss in 2006. Schwantz graduated in May with a degree in biology and a markets and management studies certificate.
Schwantz and the team will kick off the 2021 slate first with an exhibition against North Carolina A&T Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke's first regular-season match will be on the road at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, beginning with the Chanticleers Friday, Aug. 27.
