DURHAM, N.C. – Senior libero/defensive specialist
Mackenzie Cole was named to the 2021 Preseason All-ACC Team, as announced by the league office Friday. Cole is the lone defensive specialist on the list of 18 individuals.
A 2021 captain, Cole has been a mainstay for Duke's defense the past three years and helped spearhead a defense that once led the nation in opponent hitting percentage. Last season, she was named to the All-ACC, AVCA All-East Coast Region and the All-ACC Academic Teams.
Last season, Cole racked up 396 digs, 38 service aces and 93 assists. The Oakdale, N.Y., native ranked third in the ACC in digs and fourth in aces, where she picked up a season-high six in Duke's victory over Virginia in the fall.
She registered 20-plus digs six times last year and became the 24th Blue Devil to reach the 1,000-dig plateau for her career. Cole ended her third year with the Blue Devils with 1,237 career digs to rank 12th in Duke history.
Additionally, the ACC released its 2021 Preseason Coaches Poll and Duke was picked to finish ninth in the conference.
The Blue Devils will kick off the 2021 regular season on the road at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, beginning with the Chanticleers Friday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m.
