McKenna Smith joins the Blue Devils as a sprint freestyle specialist. A native of Land O Lakes, Fla., she graduated from the Academy at the Lakes and Florida Elite Swimming, swimming for coach Svet Bobev. Smith is tabbed the 12th-ranked prospect out of Florida by SwimCloud.com.
"I chose Duke not only for the combination of high-level academics and athletics, but because of the team," Smith said. "When I visited last year, everyone was so genuine and kind making me feel welcome. I knew Duke was the place I wanted to be."
Smith was a four-year letterwinner in high school, earning All-America and Scholastic All-America honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was a four-year champion at the district meet in the 100 freestyle, and also won the 50 freestyle her final three years.
At the Florida state meet, Smith most recently placed third in both the 50 and 100 freestyles as a junior and senior. Prior to that, she placed second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle as a sophomore.
Smith competed at the Winter Junior Nationals as a sophomore and the summer Junior Nationals and US Open as a junior. In addition, she holds the meet record for the Tampa Classic since 2017.
McKenna Allyn Smith was born on Nov. 20, 2002. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Brent Smith. She has one younger brother, Nate.
