Michael Volpe joins the Blue Devils as a sprint freestyle and breaststroke specialist. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native graduated from Chapel Hill High School and also competed for YOTA YMCA.

"Duke has always been a really special place to me, and I'm thrilled about the culture of academic and athletic excellence," Volpe said.

As a prep swimmer, Volpe was a two-time All-American and twice led his high school to a NCHSAA State Championship, as a junior and a senior. He was the state champion and holds the high school state record in the 200 freestyle relay. As a senior, Volpe was the relay state champion in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Volpe also competed in the 100 breaststroke at the Winter Junior National meet as a junior. In 2021, he competed in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle at the Summer Junior National meet and was an 'A' finalist in both events at the YMCA Nationals.

Out of the pool, Volpe was the valedictorian of his class at Chapel Hill and a member of the National Math Honor Society. He was also a two-time Scholastic All-American.

Michael Anthony Volpe was born on August 27, 2003 in Boston, Mass. He is the son of Jaclyn and Anthony Volpe. He has one brother (Andrew) and two sisters (Alena and Annalisa). His father, Anthony, played soccer at Duke from 1993, 1995-96 and was a member of the 1995 team that reached the NCAA College Cup. Both of Michael's parents attended Duke and graduated in 1997 while his uncle, Anthony Bova, also graduated from Duke in 2000.
