DURHAM – The Voice of the Blue Devils, David Shumate, sat down with junior offensive guard Jacob Monk for a brief question and answer session.
DS:Â Obviously the offensive line is off to a really good start. From your perspective, what has been the difference up front this year? JM:Â I feel like being able to work throughout the spring and summer together as a unit, sticking together and hanging together has really helped. We have each others backs. We are all best friends.
DS: You grew up around this program as your dad played here. Being in the stands growing up, how does that change what it is like to play for this program? JM: It is amazing. The Blue Devil Walk, it gives me chills every time I hear the fight song. I've been dreaming of it since I was five years old and I am living that dream right now.
DS: Coach Cutcliffe is a philosopher of sorts and you are in the same boat. I saw you tweet out, 'next week mentality.' What did you mean by that? JM: It was great to get a win over a Big Ten opponent like Northwestern, a great team. There is always the next team you have to play though. This week we have Kansas, all we have to do right now is focus on Kansas.
DS: We've seen the last two weeks after wins you guys dancing in the locker room. Who amongst the offensive line gets after it the most? JM: John Gelotte, he's a little dancer. He is the funniest dude alive. He and Elijah Wroten, my two roommates, those dudes are so funny. When they get dancing, they get the whole locker room going. Â
DS: I see you guys smiling out here at practice, I know there are still protocols that have to be followed but are you guys having fun again? How much fun are you guys having being around each other? JM: It is so much fun to come out here and work each and every day. Last year, we didn't know what game day would go like. This year, we know we are going to go ball. We are going to have fun. We know our assignments and we know we are going to come off the ball hard and play football the way we know how.
