DURHAM – With a season-high 18 blocks, the Duke volleyball team swept Boston College 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) to start ACC competition on a high note Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 10-2 (1-0 ACC) and have won four straight as the Eagles dip to 11-5 (1-1 ACC).
Duke's win was spearheaded by its blocking at the net, its aces and an impressive .289 hitting percentage as it limited Boston College to a .029 clip for the match. Duke held momentum the majority of the match with just two lead changes over three sets.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by rookie Rylie Kadel with 11 kills and just two errors to hit .500, marking her first double-digit kill outing in a Duke uniform. Junior Gracie Johnson added seven while sophomore Georgia Stavrinides tallied six with just one error to play to a .375 clip.
Setter Alex Springate dished 27 to assist on 35 kills, while libero Mackenzie Cole recorded 18 digs. At the net, Duke was led by Stavrinides with five blocks, including two solo, followed by Kadel with four and Ade Owokoniran with three. Duke's serving was solid this evening, led by Johnson with three aces and Mackenzie Cole and sister Taylor Cole each with two.
Duke got off to a hot start in the first frame in hitting, aces and blocks. The Blue Devils hit .444 as they committed just one error and were led by Kadel with four kills and three blocks. Taylor Cole continued to provide a spark off the bench and tallied two aces.
The Blue Devils' blocking corps continued to cause problems for the Eagles in the second set, limiting Boston College to a negative hitting percentage. Duke held a solid 17-10 lead before Boston College won nine of the next 11 points to tie it up at 19, but a couple Eagle mistakes gave Duke a 2-0 lead.
Despite a potential comeback by Boston College with a .207 hitting percentage, the Eagles couldn't hold off a Duke offense that committed just four errors in the third.
The Eagles were led by Clare Naughton with eight kills.
