DURHAM – As the Blue Devils prepare for the 2022 baseball season, head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to introduce the incoming freshman class.
Over the coming weeks, GoDuke.com will release individual introductions of its 12-member freshman class.
Â
A catcher from Nashville, Tenn.,
Andrew Yu is the second freshman to be introduced this fall.
Â
"Andrew is a skilled catch and throw defender with solid bat to ball skills at the plate," Pollard said. "He played for one of the top HS coaches in the country in Jason Maxwell, so he comes into Duke with a high baseball IQ."
Â
Yu lettered four seasons at Ensworth High School under head coach Jason Maxwell. Most recently, Yu concluded his senior season in 2021. He started all 19 games he appeared in, batting .328 with five doubles and two triples. He also drove in nine RBIs on his way to TSSAA DII-AA All-Region honors.
Â
After starting his junior season hot, Yu saw the 2020 season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In two games, he recorded two hits and two RBIs. He earned the team's Junior Inman Award that season.
Â
Yu burst onto the scene at Ensworth as a sophomore. He earned Tennessee Baseball Report Super Sophomore Region 6 honors after hitting .326 with five doubles and a home run, in addition to 14 RBIs in 31 games.
Â
Outside of high school play, Yu won both the Memorial Day Classic and the Battle of the Southeast tournaments with the East Cobb Astros 18u team. In 2019, as a member of the 615 Baseball Club 16u team, Yu's teams won the PBR Showdown at Lakepoint and finished ninth at the WWBA. His 615 Baseball Club team ranked 28
th in the nation and ninth in the Southeast in 2019.
Â
In addition to success on the diamond, Yu lettered in both wrestling and football at Ensworth.
Â
Off the field, Yu was an AP Scholar with Distinction (2020, 2021) and awarded the National Latin Exam Summa Cum Laude Award (2018, 2019, 2020), Ensworth Bar Pin Award (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) and the Ensworth Cum Laude Award in all 5 subjects (2020).
Â
Andrew is the son of Jim and Erin Yu. His father graduated from Duke in 1993 and competed on the Duke wrestling team 1990-91. His mother was a member of the women's soccer team at Pennsylvania, 1988-92. His grandfather, Rick Harley, was a member of the basketball program at Rutgers, 1965-68.
