DURHAM – No. 24 Duke (3-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion, dropping a 1-0 decision in double overtime to Seattle (3-1-0) on Monday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Â
Seattle's Alex Acton-Petronotis scored the game-winner in the 106th minute, ending the Blue Devils' shutout streak at 375:31 minutes.
Â
Duke was able to record another game of 20-plus shots though, registering 22 throughout the game with six being on frame. The Blue Devils have now reached that plateau in three of their four games to begin the 2021 season.
Â
Shots were flying right from the start, as the two teams combined for 37 throughout the contest. Duke goaltender
Eliot Hamill was forced to make several saves in the first half, while freshman
Shakur Mohammed added two of his seven shots to put pressure on the Redhawks' defense.
Â
One of Duke's best chances in the game came in the 66th minute, when a bouncing ball found
Luke Thomas inside the 18. The Charlotte, N.C., native then fired a shot but Seattle goalie Akili Kasim deflected the ball off of the right post. The ball found Mohammed's foot off the ricochet, but his shot sailed just high of the crossbar.
Â
The Redhawks quickly answered on the counterattack, getting three shots on goal in a span of just over three minutes. Hamill made several sprawling saves, including one off his face following a sliding save just outside the net, to hold Seattle in check and ultimately force overtime.
Â
The Blue Devils recorded all four shots in the first overtime period, with their best chance coming from senior
Conor Kelly. Off a set piece, Kelly wrapped a ball just wide of the right post. The Redhawks would earn the only two shots in the second overtime, including the game-winner.
Â
Duke senior goaltender
Eliot Hamill finished with a career-high eight saves.
Â
The Blue Devils will now turn their attention to ACC play, when they welcome Virginia Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
