DURHAM – Senior
Miela Goodchild notched her first career double-double, but the 16th-ranked Duke (11-3, 2-2 ACC) women's basketball team dropped a 65-54 decision to Virginia Tech (12-4, 4-1 ACC) Thursday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Senior
Elizabeth Balogun paced the Blue Devil offense with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and collected her fourth double-digit scoring effort in the last five games. Goodchild tallied a dozen points and led the way on the glass with a career-high 11 rebounds, four of which were offensive. Freshman
Shayeann Day-Wilson dished out a team high four assists.
Virginia Tech scored the first seven points of the game and then Duke answered with the next seven. Balogun got the Blue Devils on the board with a short jumper from the right side then followed it up by cashing in from distance. Graduate student
Jade Williams knotted the score on two consecutive possessions, first on a layup off a pick-and-roll with Goodchild, then tied the game at nine on a free-throw line jumper on
Amaya Finklea-Guity's assist. The visitors built their advantage back to five before
Vanessa de Jesus' bucket with 50 seconds remaining broke a four and a half minute Duke drought. Goodchild's offensive rebound and putback just before the buzzer brought Duke within 14-13 at end of the first.
Imani Lewis' perfect trip at the charity stripe gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the contest and they wouldn't relinquish it for the remainder of the period. The second quarter was nip and tuck until the three minute mark when Duke was able to gain some separation. Goodchild drained a triple from the far right corner and then Day-Wilson sank a stop-and-pop jumper. Goodchild missed her ensuing attempt but tracked down the rebound and dished it back to Lewis, who sank a fall-away jumper to give Duke a 32-25 advantage at the break.
Balogun paced the Blue Devils through the opening 20 minutes with nine points, while Goodchild led the first half assist and rebounding efforts with three helpers and six boards. Duke shot 43.3 percent from the floor and held the Hokies to 31.3 percent, including a 23.5 field goal percentage in the second.
Virginia Tech crept back into the game and pulled within two, 33-31, at the 7:33 mark before Goodchild drilled a straight-away trey to push the Duke apex back to five. The Blue Devils maintained their lead for the next several minutes as Goodchild added four more to her total and
Onome Akinbode-James and Day-Wilson each chipped in a pair from the stripe, but Duke couldn't keep the Hokies at bay. The visitors battled all the way back, reclaiming a 46-44 lead on Cayla King's three-pointer. Neither squad was able to convert a bucket over the final two minutes and Virginia Tech took a two point lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter started off tightly contested and featured two ties along with a pair of lead changes through the opening five minutes of the stanza. Duke registered the first two baskets of the quarter – the Blue Devils tied the game at 46-all on Day-Wilson's driving layup and then on the ensuing possession, Balogun gave Duke a brief two point lead (48-46) after creating space and drilling a short jumper from the right short corner.
However, Virginia Tech scored 19 of the games' final 24 points of to claim a 65-54 victory.
Junior Elizabeth Kitley led Virginia Tech with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
