Setting the Scene...
The 16th-ranked Duke women's basketball team (11-3, 2-2 ACC) will open a two-game stretch on the road Sunday, Jan. 16 as the Blue Devils face fourth-ranked NC State (15-2, 6-0) at 4 p.m., in Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
The game will be carried live on ACC Network with Beth Mowins (PXP) and Debbie Antonelli (Color) calling the action. It will also be aired on the Blue Devil Sports Network via WDNC AM 620, the Varsity Network app and www.GoDuke.com with Chris Edwards (PXP) on the air at 3:45 p.m.
What is Next?...
The Blue Devils will have a quick turnaround as Duke travels to Coral Gables, Fla., for a game against Miami on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m., live on ACC Network.
A Look at NC State...
NC State owns a 15-2 overall and 6-0 league mark, while riding a five-game winning streak. The Wolfpack have been led by Elissa Cunane (13.6 points, 7.6 rebounds), Diamond Johnson (12.2 points, 32 treys), Raina Perez (8.8 points, 25 treys), Kayla Jones (8.4 points, 20 treys) and Jakia Brown-Turner (8.2 points, 21 treys).
The Series with NC State...
Duke and NC State will meet for the 82nd time in school history with the Wolfpack leading the series 44-37. NCSU has won six out of the last eight meetings, but the Blue Devils are coming off notching a 70-65 win over No. 8 NC State in 2020.
In games played in Raleigh, N.C., Duke owns a 14-22 mark.
Duo Miss Virginia Tech Game...
Celeste Taylor and
Lexi Gordon missed the Blue Devil contest against Virginia Tech on Jan. 13. Taylor was out with an injury, while Gordon was out due to Duke's health & safety protocols.
Both Taylor and Gordon had started all 13 of Duke's contests to open the season.
Duke's medical team determined no other members of the program were at risk with this circumstance.
Over the last four games, Duke has missed at least one student-athlete in each game and a total of six in that span.
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
• In her last meeting against the Wolfpack,
Onome Akinbode-James collected 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist in 27 minutes in Raleigh on Feb. 24, 2020.
• Duke has dropped eight straight true road games against top-five ranked opponents. The last victory came on Dec. 22, 2013 at fifth-ranked Kentucky.
• Over her playing career at Tennessee,
Kara Lawson helped lead the Lady Vols to 47 wins against top-20 teams, 20 top-10 victories and nine top-5 wins. The Blue Devils are now 2-1 against ranked opponents on the season.
• In both losses to Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils were without key members of the team. In the first game, Duke was without
Shayeann Day-Wilson,
Imani Lewis and
Emma Schmidt. Then, Duke was without
Lexi Gordon and
Celeste Taylor in the second contest.
• Since
Shayeann Day-Wilson missed the Dec. 30 game against Virginia Tech due to health and safety protocols, she has hit only 6-of-27 field goals and 1-of-8 treys. Day-Wilson has averaged 8.3 points during those three games.
• In ACC games only,
Elizabeth Balogun ranks fourth in scoring with a 16.3 per game average, while ranking second in field goal percentage (58.7) and tied for ninth in blocked shots (1.3).
Miela Goodchild leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage (52.6), ranks fourth in 3-point field goals made (2.5), tied for ninth in rebounding (7.0) and tied for 11th in assists (3.0).
• Rookie
Shayeann Day-Wilson is the only freshman in the ACC that leads their team in scoring with an 11.8 per game average. Day-Wilson is the only rookie in the ACC to also lead her team in 3-point field goals made (27).

• Duke has scored 391 points off the bench in 14 games for an average of 27.9, while its opponents are averaging only 10.1 a contest. The Blue Devils' 29.5 per game average ranks third in the ACC with NC State leading (33.4) and Florida State is second (28.6). The Wolfpack (55) and Blue Devils (51) own the two single game highest bench points for a game this season in the league.

On the Road...
Duke features a 4-1 record on the road this season with the lone loss coming against Virginia Tech, when the Blue Devils were without three players due to health and safety protocols.
Elizabeth Balogun (11.8 points, 5.6 rebounds) and
Shayeann Day-Wilson (11.5 points) have paced the Blue Devils in those contests.
Duke has hit 41.3 percent from the field and 29.1 percent from downtown on the road. The Blue Devils are averaging 70.8 points a game, while holding foes to 57.6 points.
Goodchild Taking Advantage of Time...
Over the last five games, senior
Miela Goodchild has seen her minutes go up as she has played 22 or more minutes in each of those contests, including a season-high 36 minutes in each of the last two games. She has averaged 10.2 points,6.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals during that stretch. Goodchild has hit 12-of-24 treys in those games.
Goodchild hit only 6-of-21 treys over the first nine games of the season.
She was inserted into the starting lineup three games ago and has averaged 12.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals. Goodchild has hit 14-of-26 field goals and 9-of-15 treys in those contests.
Goodchild is coming off collecting her first collegiate double-double against Virginia Tech with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Akinbode-James Nets Career High...
Senior
Onome Akinbode-James collected a career-high 16 points on the road at Syracuse in only 18 minutes of action. She hit 5-of-9 field goals, 6-of-6 free throws, grabbed six boards, had two blocks and one steal.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup four games ago, Akinbode-James has averaged 8.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks a game. She has hit 50.0 percent from the field as well.
Taylor Injured at Syracuse...
Celeste Taylor is one of the best all-around players in the nation, but the junior was injured at Syracuse and she is listed as day-to-day. On the season, she is averaging 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.7 assists on the year.
Taylor recently collected a season-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds, six steals and six assists versus Troy. According to Her Hoop Stats, this was the first 24/11/6/6 performance in almost two years - and only the sixth such performance since 2009-10 nationally.
It marked the eighth time over her career she has notched 20+ points and the second time this season. Taylor has collected back-to-back double-doubles as a Blue Devil and six over her career.
