DURHAM – Since Duke women's basketball rookie Shayeann Day-Wilson joined the Blue Devils this fall, the 5-5 point guard has made in immediate impact and her play is gaining national attention. This week, Day-Wilson was tabbed the No. 4 freshman nationally by ESPN.com. Â
A product of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Day-Wilson has averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals on the year. She has played in 15 contests, while starting the last three. Â
She is the only freshman in the ACC that leads their team in scoring with an 11.9 per game average and 3-point field goals made (30). Day-Wilson ranks eighth overall in the ACC with 3.53 assists per game, while leading true freshmen as well. She is hitting 39.5 percent from 3-point land, which ranks fourth in the ACC as well. Â
Through only 15 games, Day-Wilson has drained 30 three-pointers and attempted 76 treys to rank tied for 10th on the Duke freshman record charts. Â
Day-Wilson has come up big for the Blue Devils in their biggest games as she collected 19 points against ninth-ranked Iowa, 17 points versus top-ranked South Carolina, 14 points at fourth-ranked NC State and notched a career-high 26 points versus Troy. She has collected double-digit scoring in four straight league contests.
The rookie garnered United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week on Dec. 7 along with ACC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 29 for her efforts.
The No. 21 ranked Blue Devils (12-4, 3-3 ACC) will next host Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m., live on ACC Network. Â
