DURHAM – Seven members of the Duke cross country program were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.
The men's team featured five Duke athletes – graduate students
Nick Dahl,
Josh Romine and
Michael Ungvarsky as well as juniors
Owen MacKenzie and
Sam Rivera. On the women's side, graduate student
Michaela Reinhart and sophomore
Charlotte Tomkinson represented the Blue Devils.
This is Reinhart's fifth-consecutive conference academic selection, while Rivera and Romine earn the honor for the second and third time in their careers, respectively.
Reinhart, Romine and Tomkinson led the charge for the Blue Devils at the ACC Championships this past fall as the trio picked up All-ACC honors. Reinhart led all Duke athletes with a 14th-place finish, marking the fifth year in a row that the Lexington, Ky., native finished first overall for the Blue Devils.
NC State and Syracuse led the conference with 12 and eight selections, respectively, followed by Florida State and Notre Dame with eight apiece. Duke and North Carolina both had seven honorees.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
