DURHAM – Duke women's tennis gave a valiant effort, but the sixth-ranked Blue Devils (3-1) dropped a narrow 4-2 decision to No. 17 Oklahoma (5-0) on Sunday afternoon at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils took the first doubles match of the afternoon as the freshmen duo of
Ellie Coleman and
Emma Jackson easily defeated Anchisa Chanta/Marcelina Podlinska 6-1 on court three. One court over, the matchup between the top doubles pairings of Duke's
Georgia Drummy and
Karolina Berankova and Oklahoma's Carmen and Ivana Corley went down to the wire.
Court one featured a battle of numerous momentum shifts. Drummy and Berankova took the first two games to grab the early edge, but the Corley sisters won the next four to surge into the lead. The Blue Devil duo displayed their resiliency and took the two games to draw even. The opponents traded the next four games and headed into the tiebreaker with the score knotted at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Drummy and Berankova tallied the first two points, but the Sooners pairing managed to rattle off seven straight to claim a 7-6 (2) match win.
The doubles point came down to court three where Duke's 20th-ranked doubles duo of
Chloe Beck and
Margaryta Bilokin were locked into a tight match with Layne Sleeth/Alexandra Pisareva. After fiercely battling through the first 10 games, the clubs stood deadlocked at 5-5. However, the Sooners went on to take the match for a 1-0 lead.
The 73rd-ranked Drummy struck first for the Blue Devils in singles, securing the first team point with a 6-0, 6-0 over the 105th-ranked Carmen Corley.
After Oklahoma extended its lead to 3-1 with victories over No. 26 Jackson and senior
Kelly Chen, Bilokin sliced the deficit in half with a tight win on court five over Alexandra Pisareva. The senior rallied back from an early 2-4 deficit to take the first set, 7-5, then posted a 6-4 second set win to pull Duke within one.
No. 15 Beck and No. 48 Coleman each fought back from first-set losses to force a third set, with both players winning the second set 6-4. Beck was up a break in her third set at 4-2, but No. 101 Emma Staker was able to outlast Coleman in the third set on court six to secure the match for the visitors.
