JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Duke men's golf team sits just two shots behind first-place Boston College after the first 36 holes of competition at the Georgetown Intercollegiate at Liberty National Golf Club. The Blue Devils have three individuals inside the top-25 of the leaderboard, including both
Ian Siebers and
Kelly Chinn in the top five.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND 1
- Duke finished tied for first place after the first 18 holes of play with a team score of 287 (-1).
- Ian Siebers led the Blue Devils' morning efforts with his 69 (-3), finishing the first round in a tie for first place. The junior shot a 33 on the back, including an eagle on the par-5 10th hole and back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17, before finishing with two birdies in his last four holes to shoot an even-par 36 on the front nine.
- After starting his day on the ninth hole, Kelly Chinn caught fire on the back nine, making four birdies in six holes, including three in a row on holes 15-17. The sophomore's low scoring helped steady his round, with Chinn making par on the first five holes on the front before a hole-out eagle from a greenside bunker on the par-5 sixth.
- Playing on a course located across the Hudson River from where he grew up, Luke Sample carded an even-par 72 in his first round. After birding his first hole of the day, the par-4 fifth, the sophomore carded an even-par 36 on the back and wrapped up his round with a birdie on the par-3 fourth to finish with a 72 (E).
- Also for Duke, freshman Ethan Evans finished in a tie for 39th place (+4) and sophomore John Peters carded a 75 (+3) to sit in a tie for 35th place heading into the second round.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND 2
- The Blue Devils finished the first day of competition with a second-round team score of 292 (+4).
- Duke staked claim to its first solo first place of the tournament with a quick start to the second round. Ethan Evans and Kelly Chinn started 7-under through their first five combined holes of the afternoon, with both carding an eagle on the par-5 10th hole.
- Ian Siebers continued his steady play throughout his second round, turning in an even-par 72, entering the final round in fourth place at 3-under.
- Chinn went around Liberty National in 71 (-1) during his second round, moving the sophomore into a tie for fifth-place individually.
- Also for Duke, Luke Sample shot a 76 (+4) and is tied for 21st, Evans improved from his first round and carded a 73 (+1) and John Peters rounded out Duke's lineup with a second-round 78 (+6).
NOTES
- Kelly Chinn was in red figures for the entire second round following his birdie on his first hole of the afternoon.
- Ian Siebers carded his second eagle of the season on the 10th hole in his second round.
- Duke was the top team for scoring on par-5's, averaging 4.58 strokes and shooting 17-under as a team.
- The Blue Devils had the most eagles as a team with four and the second-most birdies with 32.
- Chinn was the second-best individual scorer on par-4's and par-5's, finishing the first two rounds at 1-under and 5-under on those respective holes.
