DURHAM – Behind a balanced offensive attack and some stifling defense, the Duke women's basketball team raced to a resounding, 111-50 victory over Charleston Southern Thursday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils finished the game with six players in double figures en route to eclipsing the century mark for the first time in six years. Graduate student
Taya Corosdale went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and finished with 14 points to lead the Duke scoring efforts, while sophomore
Reigan Richardson provided instant offense off the bench once again as she scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Senior
Celeste Taylor added 12 points and was a pest defensively, finishing the contest with a team-best four steals, while classmate
Elizabeth Balogun, junior
Kennedy Brown and sophomore
Lee Volker chipped in 10 points apiece.
Jazmine Jackson and Sha'Mya Leigh led Charleston Southern with nine points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duke jumped out to an early 15-6 lead midway through the first quarter (4:24). All five starters had scored a point, led by Lee Volker's six points (3-of-3) and Celeste Taylor's four points.
- The Blue Devils held a 10-2 advantage on the glass at that point, led by Jordyn Oliver's three boards.
- Duke closed the quarter on a 17-3 run, capped off by Shayeann Day-Wilson's triple just before the buzzer to extend its advantage to 23 at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
- Back-to-back open layups from Reigan Richardson gave the home team a 38-12 lead and forced the Buccaneers into an early timeout at the 6:29 mark. From there, Duke went on a 24-7 run over the remainder of the second to balloon its lead to 43 and take a 62-19 lead into the break.
- Corosdale and Taylor paced the first-half scoring efforts with 14 and 10 points apiece, respectively. Richardson (9) and Day-Wilson (8) were also close to double figures as well.
- Duke maintained its stranglehold on the game, outscoring the Buccaneers 27-10 in the third. At the end of the quarter the Blue Devils held a 60-point margin, 89-29.
- The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas in the final period as they went on to close out the 111-50 victory.
GAME NOTES:
- The Blue Devils eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since Nov. 15, 2016.
- Six players finished the game in double figures – Corosdale (14), Richardson (13), Taylor (12), Balogun (10), Brown (10) and Volker (10).
- The Blue Devils' 32 points in the first quarter were the second-most points scored in the opening period in program history.
- Duke's 43-point margin at the half (62-19) was tied for the sixth-largest halftime lead in program history, while the 62 points, the most first-half points since 2011, also check in at No. 6 on the Duke charts for most first-half points.
- Duke's made 42 field goals, 26 were assisted on.
- Jordyn Oliver led the way for the Blue Devils on the glass and in the assist department as she snagged eight boards and dished out six assists.
- Duke forced 29 Charleston Southern turnovers and netted 43 points off those miscues. The Blue Devils also held sizeable margins over the opposition in bench points (59-13), points in the paint (68-16), fastbreak points (37-3) and second-chance points (24-2).
