COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Duke wrestling program opened its 2022-23 duals campaign in Maryland on Saturday, defeating Bloomsburg (32-6) after falling to American (21-15) and Maryland (37-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Redshirt junior Patrick Rowland was first to put up points for the Blue Devils in the opening match against American with a 5-4 decision. Rowland improved to 2-1 on the day after securing a 6-2 decision over Bloomsburg.
- Freshman Gaetano Console made a strong debut for the Blue Devils, defeating American's Ryan Zimmerman in a 6-4 decision and garnering a 3-1 win against Bloomsburg.
- The Blue Devils found success in the heavier weight classes with junior Conor Becker and seniors Vincent Baker and Jonah Nisenbaum each finishing with two-win days.
- Baker added in points at 197 pounds with a sudden victory decision, 3-1, over Connor Bourne of American and a convincing 9-3 victory against the Huskies.
- Wrestling heavyweight, Niesenbaum's first win was a decision 6-2 over Isaac Righter from American. After a tight battle in his second match that ended with Jaron Smith of Maryland scoring last-second points to escape with a 7-3 decision. However, the senior captain bounced back to close out the day with a 10-5 win over Bloomsburg.
NOTES
- Duke stands at 1-2 to start the season.
- Rookies Console and Nick Tattini captured their first collegiate wins with Console going 2-1 and Tattini besting his Bloomsburg foe, 9-7.
