TEMPE, Ariz. – The Duke softball program (3-1, 0-0 ACC) split day two at the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday, defeating Utah in the opener, but falling to No. 21 Arizona State in the nightcap.
The Blue Devils delivered another double-digit run performance against the Utes (1-2, 0-0 PAC-12) winning 11-2. The runs continued to come against the Sun Devils (3-1, 0-0 PAC-12) but the Blue Devils fell on a walk-off home run, 8-7.
Duke vs. Utah
In a carbon-copy of her game against California Baptist,
Rachel Crabtree got the offense going with a first inning home run, taking the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a 1-0 lead. However, Utah was able to generate a quick response, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.
The Blue Devils wouldn't be down long, as
Kelly Torres singled, and
Kristina Foreman drove her in on a deep home run to center field to take a 3-2 lead. Keeping the run of power going, the Blue Devils added home runs in the third and fourth inning, thanks to solo blasts from
Gisele Tapia and
Caroline Jacobsen to take a 5-2 lead.
Starting pitcher
Jala Wright bounced back from the first inning to throw a gem in her first start as a Blue Devil. Wright went five innings, allowing just two hits and two earned runs, while striking out five, before giving way to scoreless innings from
Shelby Walters and
Lillie Walker.
Duke's offense exploded in the top of the seventh inning, adding six more runs on the scoreboard. After loading the bases,
Jameson Kavel drove all three runners in on a bases-clearing double to make it 8-2. The Blue Devils would add another run on a wild pitch, before
Leah Jarnac ripped her first collegiate hit for a two-RBI single to make it 11-2.
Duke vs. #21 Arizona State
The Blue Devils would turn their attention to the Sun Devils as the two teams played late into the Arizona night. Both starting pitchers,
Peyton St. George and Allison Royalty turned in three scoreless innings, before the Blue Devils struck on the opening run, when Foreman drove home Kavel on an RBI single to make it 1-0.
The Sun Devils quickly responded with five runs, but the Blue Devils began to chip away. The rally began when
Ana Gold launched her first collegiate home run into left center field in the fifth inning to shave the deficit to three.
Then in the sixth inning, Jacobsen made the Sun Devils pay for a fielding error, driving home Torres with a blast to right field to cut the lead to 5-4.
Kamryn Jackson continued the rally with a single immediately after Jacobsen's home run, and
Kyla Morris reached on a hit by pitch, setting up Gold once again. The freshman delivered an RBI single up the middle, to drive home a streaking Jackson and tie the game at 5-5.
With two runners still on,
Taylor Krapf reached base, giving Crabtree another chance. The graduate student drilled a single of her own to give the Blue Devils the lead at 6-5.
Arizona State was able to get one back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Blue Devils kept the pressure on the home team in the seventh. After drawing two early walks, the Blue Devils got another with the bases loaded, as Morris drew it to take a 7-6 lead. However, the Sun Devils were able to respond in the bottom half of the seventh, with a walk-off two-run home run by Kristiana Watson.

- Jacobsen now has a home run in three straight games, good for the longest streak of her career.
- Kavel recorded her 40th career double in the win over Utah.
- Leah Jarnac, Taylor Krapf and Lillie Walker each made their Blue Devils debut on Saturday.
The Blue Devils will wrap up play at the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday, meeting Utah for a rematch at 10 a.m. ET. The game will be broadcast via the PAC-12 Network.
