GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference is set to honor 54 student-athletes who have been selected as 2022 Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipients.
This year's list includes three student-athletes who will also receive the Thacker Award and nine student-athletes who plan to pursue professional careers in their chosen sports and were named honorary recipients.
Duke's honorees were
Tess Boade (women's soccer),
Josh Finesilver (wrestling) and
Cooper Stinson (baseball) while
Gina Kim (women's golf) was selected an honorary scholarship nominee.
A two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Boade wrapped up her distinguished Duke career this past fall by earning first-team All-ACC and United Soccer Coaches second-team All-Atlantic Region accolades. As a graduate student and team captain in 2021, she posted career highs in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21), while netting the game-winner in victories over No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 North Carolina. The crafty midfielder from Highlands Ranch, Colo., pocketed 10 game-winning goals throughout her career to rank eighth all-time at Duke, while her 93 matches played rank fourth. The Blue Devils competed in the NCAA Championship in all five seasons that Boade was in Durham. After earning her undergraduate degree in International Comparative Studies, Boade is currently pursuing her master's in Duke's Management of Clinical Informatics program (MMCi).
Finesilver is set to conclude his standout Blue Devils career at the ACC and NCAA Championships this March, entering with an all-time record of 76-41. A native of Greenwood Village, Colo., Finesilver could become just the third wrestler in Duke history to compete in four separate NCAA Championships. This season, Finesilver is 25-4 and ranked No. 14 in the nation by InterMat at 149 pounds. The redshirt senior is a three-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree and is set to graduate with a degree in evolutionary anthropology.
Kim, a native of Durham, N.C., is a two-time All-America with the women's golf program. She is coming off a 2021-22 campaign where she shot 10-under-par at the ACC Championship on her way to winning the ACC Individual title, while also going 2-0 in match play to help lead the Blue Devils to their 21st ACC Championship in school history. Kim went on to finish tied for fifth at the NCAA Championship to become the fourth Duke golfer to place in the top-10 at the NCAA Championship in her first two appearances. She helped lead the Blue Devils to the semifinals of match play at the NCAA Championship in 2021 and the NCAA title as a rookie in 2019. Kim earned her LPGA Tour card in December of 2021 and officially turned professional in January of 2022 to purse her dream of being a professional golfer.
A senior out of Peachtree Corners, Ga., Stinson is one of the most experienced arms on the Duke staff. The 6-6 right-hander has appeared in 38 games with 34 starts, holding a 5.07 ERA with 153 strikeouts in 140.1 innings pitched. His 34 starts currently rank tied for 15th in program history. Last season, Stinson was named to the ACC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team after throwing six shutout innings against NC State in the title game. Stinson's start to the 2020 season was superb as he tallied a 3-0 record with a 0.42 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work prior to it being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stinson is set to graduate in May with a degree in biology and a minor in political science.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
This year's class of postgraduate scholarship recipients will be highlighted in a one-hour show on ACC Network that will air in May.
