ATLANTA, Ga. – No. 13 Duke softball (14-3, 1-0 ACC) opened ACC play with a bang, defeating Georgia Tech 9-1 in game one of a three-game set at Shirley Clements Mewborn Stadium on Friday night.
Freshman
Ana Gold led the way for the Blue Devils tallying five RBI, while
Jameson Kavel was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. In the circle,
Peyton St. George tossed a two-hit gem, going a complete five innings, allowing just one run while striking out four.
Georgia Tech (15-3, 0-1 ACC) was first on the board, scoring a first inning run after two opening walks and an RBI hit by Mallorie Black. From there, the Blue Devils settled down, registering at least one hit per inning in the first three frames.
In the fourth,
Kelly Torres kick-started the offense with a double to right field in the frame's first at-bat. After a
Kyla Morris single and a
Deja Davis walk, Gold stepped to the plate. The Ballston Spa, N.Y., native crushed a 2-1 pitch into the left center field parking lot for the Blue Devils third grand slam of the season, taking a 4-1 lead.
After forcing Yellow Jackets starter Blake Neleman out of the game, the Blue Devils continued to pour on in the fifth inning. Torres and Davis drew early walks and Gold would drive home her fifth RBI of the day on a single that was misplayed, allowing an additional run to score and make it 6-1.
Rachel Crabtree immediately drove Gold home on an RBI single to make it 7-1 then Kavel cleared the bases with a two-run blast to left field for a 9-1 lead. Kavel finished the day a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
St. George continued to handle the Yellow Jackets lineup, picking up another strikeout in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the run rule victory. Her win was the sixth of the season and moves her just one win away from 50 in her collegiate career.
The Blue Devils will meet the Yellow Jackets for game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

- Kavel's four-hit day ties Torres as the most in a single game by a Blue Devil this season.
