ATLANTA, Ga. – No. 13 Duke softball (15-3, 2-0 ACC) used a late inning burst of offense to put away Georgia Tech, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Clements Mewborn Stadium.
Four different Blue Devils tallied home runs in the win over the Yellow Jackets (15-4, 0-2 ACC). In the circle,
Jala Wright,
Claire Davidson and
Peyton St. George allowed just five hits and three runs, striking out seven. St. George earned the victory in relief.
Much like the night before, Georgia Tech was first on the board, scoring two in the opening frame. Mallorie Black recorded an RBI single, and the Yellow Jackets added extra run off a double play turned by
Kristina Foreman to make it 2-0.
The Blue Devils delivered a quick response in the top of the second, as Foreman led off the inning with a solo blast to left center field to shave the deficit to 2-1. Her home run was her team leading eighth of the season.
In the third,
Rachel Crabtree followed Foreman's method, leading off the inning with a solo home run of her own to tie the game at 2-2.
The long ball trend would continue for the Blue Devils in the fifth inning, as Georgia native
Jameson Kavel broke the deadlock with a home run on the first pitch, giving Duke a 3-2 lead.
After St. George came in and got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth,
Gisele Tapia gave the Blue Devils some breathing room in the sixth, driving home two runs on an RBI double to left center field for a 5-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the frame, on an Emma Kauf home run.
The bats came alive in the seventh inning, as the Blue Devils added five more runs. After another hit by Kavel,
Leah Jarnac laced an RBI double into left field for a 6-3 lead. That hit knocked Yellow Jackets starter Chandler Dennis out of the game, but the hits kept coming for Duke.
Kelly Torres launched her first home run of the season off the new reliever to make it 8-3. After two singles from
Kamryn Jackson and
Kyla Morris, the Blue Devils used smart base running to extend the lead further. Jackson came home on an RBI groundout by Tapia and Morris stole a base and extended the play on an error to make it 10-3.
The Blue Devils will be back in action for the series finale, facing the Yellow Jackets on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Notes:
- Kavel improves to 6-for-7 (.857) with two HR, three RBI, three runs, a double and a walk in the series in her native Georgia.
- Kavel's run scored on Jarnac's double was the 150th run scored in her collegiate career.
- With a third inning walk, Caroline Jacobsen extended her on-base streak to 18 games in a row.
- St. George tallied her 50th college victory. She becomes the first Blue Devil in program history to reach that mark.
- The Blue Devils have tallied double-digit runs for the sixth time this season. That matches all of last season's total.
