DURHAM - The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team came up short Sunday at third-ranked Syracuse, falling 18-16 in its ACC opener at the Carrier Dome.
With the setback, the Blue Devils drop their first contest this season (6-1, 0-1 ACC), while the Orange improve to 5-1 (1-0 ACC).
Graduate student Catriona Barry led the way for Duke with eight points from four goals and four dimes. Sophomore Katie DeSimone added six points (one goal, five assists) in the contest. In goal for Duke was senior Sophia LeRose with nine saves.
Duke leads the country in offensive scoring and was on full display early in the contest this afternoon.
Duke dominated the first quarter of action with a 9-2 lead after the first 15 minutes. Syracuse scored first, but then it was all Duke the rest of the way.
Winning the draw was vital in this contest and Duke won 9-of-12 draws to help control possession and the tempo of the game early. Maddie Jenner finished the day with 10 draws while Katie Keller added seven. The Blue Devils' defense stayed tough and held the Orange scoreless for 12 minutes as Duke tallied eight unanswered scores.
Barry led the way early with six points from two goals and four assists with Caroline DeBellis and Eva Greco each adding two goals. DeSimone got going early as well with a goal and two dimes.
The Orange started the second quarter on a 4-0 run to cut Duke's lead to three (9-6). Jenner tallied her first goal of the game at 8:51 off of DeSimone's third assist to stop a the Orange run (10-6). The two squads traded goals in the final five minutes of the half as Barry captured her third goal of the game (3:08) for a four goal lead. With 19 ticks left in the first half, Duke won the draw and raced down toward the Syracuse goal. DeSimone dished her fourth assist as she found Jenner charging toward the goal for her second of the day and a 12-8 halftime lead.
Syracuse outscored Duke 5-1 in the third frame as Meaghan Tyrrell notched four of the five.
The contest was all tied up at 13 at the start of the fourth with Barry held scoreless for nearly the entire second half. Syracuse took its first lead of the contest since 30 seconds into the contest as Megan Carney tallied her third of the game to open the fourth quarter. Olivia Carner notched her first of the day for the equalizer (13:10) to tie it up 14-14. Carney went right back and took the lead for Syracuse (15-14) with 12 minutes left to spark a 3-0 Orange run.
Duke won a critical draw control and set up a free-position attempt that Barry connected on, her first point of the second half at 4:41. Down by two, Carner came in clutch at 3:04 to pull Duke within one (17-16). Barry got a good look at the equalizer but hit post with under two minutes left. Following an Orange timeout, Sam Swart gave Syracuse the 18-16 lead that would be the final for the game.
Katie Cosgrove led the way for Duke's defense with a ground ball and a caused turnover.
The Orange were led by Tyrrell with six points (five goals, one assist) and Megan Carney (five goals). Goalkeeper Kimber Hower picked up eight saves.
Duke returns to Koskinen Stadium for two games next week. The Blue Devils welcome Pittsburgh Thursday, March 10 before No. 24 Penn Sunday, March 13.
