PITTSBURGH, Pa. – No. 9 Duke (41-7, 19-3 ACC) advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 ACC Championship, defeating seventh-seeded Georgia Tech, 9-6, on Thursday night at Vartabedian Field on the campus of Pittsburgh.
The Blue Devils used nine runs, four home runs and 12 hits to power past Georgia Tech (37-16, 11-13 ACC).
Jala Wright (12-2) allowed just three hits and two runs to secure the win in the circle, striking out four Yellow Jacket batters.
Duke was the first to strike in the opening frame, as
Gisele Tapia used a 13-pitch at bat to assist her teammates.
Rachel Crabtree was next up and singled, to set up
Kristina Foreman. Foreman launched the second pitch she saw, nearly off the top of the left field flagpole, for two-run home run to lead 2-0.
After three scoreless innings with three strikeouts for Wright, the Blue Devils added on two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Much like the first inning, a Crabtree single was the catalyst. Foreman singled as well, before
Caroline Jacobsen drove in both runs with an RBI double down the left field line for a 4-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets would have an answer, as they slowly chipped away at the Duke lead. After getting two runners on in the fifth inning, Georgia Tech added two runs on a RBI groundout and a wild pitch to make it 4-2. Then in the sixth inning, Kennedy Cowden hit a solo home run to shave the deficit to 4-3.
However, the Blue Devils would be unphased, responding with a big sixth inning. A Jacobsen single would set up
Francesca Frelick, who battled back from an 0-2 count to pull a ball out of the park and off the scoreboard to take a 6-3 lead. Pinch-hitter
Deja Davis would go back-to-back with Frelick, taking a pitch over the wall in right center field to make it 7-3.
The sixth inning power surge continued, as
Kelly Torres hit a single, before
Jameson Kavel stepped to the plate. Kavel laced her 16th home run of the season deep into left field, extending the Duke lead to 9-3.
Georgia Tech mounted a late comeback attempt, as Tricia Awald hit a solo home run and Cowden hit her second blast to shave the Duke lead to 9-6. However,
Peyton St. George struck out the final batter, to secure the victory.
The Blue Devils will await the winner of third-seeded Florida State and sixth-seeded Virginia in the semifinals, on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ACC Network.
Notes:
- The four home runs hit by the Blue Devils are the most the program has ever hit in a postseason game.
- The mark also ties an ACC record for the most single game home runs by one team, matching Florida State in 2017 and Georgia Tech in 2006.
- The game also set an ACC record for most home runs between two teams, with seven between the two programs.
- With a stolen base from Kyla Morris, the Blue Devils now have four players with at least 10 stolen bases apiece. That's the most in program history.
