COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Duke men's golf team played the final three holes on Monday a combined 1-under par as the NCAA Columbus Regional began at the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course. The Blue Devils are tied for fifth on the leaderboard, led by
Jimmy Zheng's even-par 71.
Zheng closed strong with par of birdies over his final three holes, while
Quinn Riley produced the shot of the day on Monday as the senior holed out from the fairway for eagle on the 18th by draining a pitching wedge from 122 yards away.
Three Blue Devils are inside the top 25 through 18 holes, with Zheng tied for eighth at even par, followed by classmate
Ian Siebers in a tie for 14th at 1-over 72 and Riley tied for 25th at 2-over 73. Duke, which played 90 holes total on Monday, did so without a double bogey on any card.
On a tough scoring day overall that began with a one-hour delay due to overnight rain and ended in windy, but sunny, conditions, top-seeded Oklahoma State leads the 13-team field at 4-under 280. East Tennessee State (+2), San Francisco (+4), Clemson (+5), Duke (+6), Ohio State (+6) and Georgia Tech (+6) round out the top five on a tightly-packed leaderboard. Arkansas's Julian Perico is the individual leader at 3-under par.
"It's a golf course where the premium is on driving, and if you're in the rough, you have to smart about where you leave it," said head coach
Jamie Green. "When you can avoid having a double bogey on the card -- that's a big deal on a golf course that's this challenging. We did a lot of good things today."
Zheng, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, played bogey-free on front, which included a birdie on a par-5 fourth to turn in 1-under 35. He shook off back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th with birdies on the par-4 16th and par-3 17th and converted a clutch par on the 18th to finish at even-par 71 Monday. He was 1-under for the day on the course's par-3 holes -- one of just seven golfers in the field in the red on the par-3's.
Siebers poured in consecutive birdies on the par-5 6th and par-4 7th and had his round under par after a birdie on par-4 10th. The Bellevue, Wash., native would give shots back on the 13th and 14th with bogey, but steadied his round coming home with four straight pars to sign for his 72.
The eagle for Riley on the 18th was one of only two eagles surrendered on the entire course Monday. After a 295-yard drive left the senior 122 yards in, he struck a dazzling pitching wedge that landed short of the hole, skipped past and spun back into the cup.
"He hit a beautiful golf shot," said Green. "It wasn't something that was a fluke. He hit a great golf shot in the moment. But that hole-out was big and Jimmy making two birdies down the stretch was big."
Also for Duke on Monday, freshman
Kelly Chinn carded a three-over 74 and is tied for 35th, while classmate
Luke Sample is a shot back and tied for 51st. Sample's 14 pars on Monday led the team and were third-most in the field.
The 54-hole NCAA Regional continues Tuesday with second-round play. Duke is paired with Clemson and Ohio State Tuesday, and the trio is off the 10th tee beginning at 8 a.m. The low five teams following Wednesday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.
