CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Duke junior
Garrett Johns had his NCAA Singles Championship run come to an end Tuesday with a tough 5-7, 4-6, 5-7 setback to the NCAA Singles' reigning national champion in Sam Riffice of Florida at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill.
Â
Johns, who is ranked 49th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, batted back-and-forth with the No. 28 ranked collegiate player in Tuesday's Round of 32. The opening set could have gone either way, but it was Riffice who came out on top, 7-5. Johns would not go down easily as the Atlanta, Ga., native responded with a 6-4 victory in the second frame to force a decisive third set. Again, the match was a seesaw affair with both players earning key points. Unfortunately, Riffice would hold off any final attempts at an upset to secure the 7-5 win.
Â
Johns ends his 2021-22 campaign with a 19-10 overall record and 8-5 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
