DURHAM – The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships as the Blue Devils swept Quinnipiac, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Stadium.
"It was a good first match for us," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "With two weeks off, you don't really get two weeks off in a season, I think we were at a point where we just wanted to compete and play. We wanted to make sure we came out with energy – we knew we were the better team, but we didn't want to have any lulls in our emotion or what we've been doing. For us, it doesn't matter who the opponent is, we're just looking at it as another opportunity to play and get better. I think we did a good job of that today."
Duke (20-3) jumped on the Bobcats right out of the gate and collected the doubles point just 23 minutes into the contest. The Blue Devils' pairing of
Margaryta Bilokin and
Eliza Omirou dispatched Jordan Bradley and Dominique Vasile 6-0 on court three, while the 17th-ranked duo of
Karolina Berankova and
Georgia Drummy defeated Alessia Truden and Kamilla Nella, 6-1, in flight one to give Duke a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils carried the momentum into singles where they finished off Quinnipiac (13-9) via wins on courts two, five and six. No. 14 Drummy made quick work of Kamilla Nella in the second slot as she breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 decision, then Omirou followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win against Brittney Wilbur on court six. Freshman
Ellie Coleman clinched the shutout for Duke in flight five as she took down Jordan Bradley (6-1, 6-1) for the 4-0 decision.
"We're looking to carry the level of emotion over to tomorrow's match – to leave everything out on the court from a physical, mental and emotional standpoint," Ashworth added. "We need to have that high level and high commitment level to do that tomorrow and get through that match. We're looking forward to that opportunity and again, it's another chance for us to try to get better."
