LONG GROVE, Ill. – Duke women's golf rising senior
Megan Furtney claimed the Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship on Thursday with a 2UP victory over Minnesota's Grace Curran at The Grove Country Club in Long Grove, Ill.
It marked the first victory for Furtney in the Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship.
"Coming into the week, I knew I'd have to play a lot of golf to get to the championship match," said Furtney. "So, I really just took each day one shot at a time. Having a rematch in the finals against Grace was a lot of fun. She is a really solid player, so I expected a lot of great shots from her and tried to stay focused on my own game."
In the championship match, Curran won holes No. 1 and No. 3 to take a 2UP lead early. Furtney went for the green in two on the par five sixth hole with a 7-iron. She got up-and-down for birdie to win the hole and then tied the match on No. 8. A native of St. Charles, Ill., Furtney rolled in a 12-footer for birdie on No. 9 to take her first lead of the contest and wouldn't surrender the lead the rest of the way.
Furtney hit all nine greens in regulation on the back nine and on No. 18 she hit her approach within eight feet and Curran conceded the match.
In the semifinals, Furtney collected a win over Gracie Piar in 19 holes, while knocking off Maria Perakis (6&5) in the quarterfinals, Millie Lawson (2&1) in the round of 16 and Molly Lyne (3&2) in the round of 32. Furtney turned in a 1-under-par, 71, in qualifying to finish tied for second.
Last year, Furtney advanced to the championship match, before falling to Curran.
