LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second consecutive season, the Duke softball coaching staff has been named the Southeast Region Staff of the Year, as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its 2022 Division I Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year on Thursday.
Led by head coach
Marissa Young, her staff of assistant coaches
Josh Bloomer and
Jessica Bracamonte, as well as volunteer assistant
Nicole Schaffer helped lead the Blue Devils to new heights in 2022, culminating in the first NCAA Super Regional appearance in program history.
The Blue Devils compiled a 44-11 record, tallying a 40-win regular season for the first time in program history. Duke hosted the first NCAA Regional in program history, defeating UMBC, Liberty and Georgia at Duke Softball Stadium to advance.
Under the staff's leadership, the Blue Devils developed two All-Americans in
Jameson Kavel and
Peyton St. George, while earning a team-high six players to an All-ACC team. The 2022 Blue Devils set new program highs in nearly every major category, including batting average, slugging, on-base percentage, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, stolen bases, pitching strikeouts and fielding percentage.
Duke earned plenty of national recognition, reaching the top-10 nationally in every major poll, with a high of No. 7 set in the week three D1Softball rankings. In the NFCA's weekly rankings, the Blue Devils reached an all-time high of No. 9 in the nation.
By earning this award, the staff is now eligible for the NFCA's Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year award, which will be announced on June 23.
