DURHAM – Duke track and field incoming freshman
Gianna Locci was tabbed the Gatorade New York Girls Track & Field Player of the Year, the organization announced on Thursday.
Locci garnered the distinction following a sensational senior campaign that saw her smash the state record in the long jump at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. The senior flew out to 21-1.50 feet to earn the silver medal, notching the nation's No. 2 long jump performance among girls prep competitors in 2022. Locci's leap was also the No. 10 long jump mark in U.S. girls prep history.
The Stillwater, N.Y., native also won the long jump at the N.Y. Federation Championships, while at the Division 2 championships, she won the long jump and 200-meter dash, while anchoring the victorious 4x100 relay team.
Locci is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Player of the Year award to be announced in July.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
Since the program's inception in 1985, Gatorade Player of the Year award recipients have won hundreds of professional and college championships, and many have also turned into pillars in their communities, becoming coaches, business owners and educators.
