DURHAM – As the summer carries on, Duke men's soccer alumni continue making impacts on the professional soccer circuit. The North American professional soccer season is well underway, while several other Blue Devils prepare for new tests internationally.
MLS
Brian White and Vancouver Whitecaps FC made history on Tuesday, winning their second Canadian Championship in team history and first since 2015, by defeating Toronto FC in penalty kicks 1-1 (5-3 PK). White made his presence felt in clutch situations, scoring a brace against York United to advance to the final. In the final, White scored in the 19th minute on a header, before burying his penalty kick in the shootout to secure the win. White ended the tournament in a tie as the leading goal scorer and helped secure his team a spot in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League.
White continues to have success in MLS play as well, where he scored a goal on July 17 against the Portland Timbers. White has three MLS goals this season, despite missing a few games early in the season due to injury.
Jeremy Ebobisse has continued a huge season with the San Jose Earthquakes, ranking tied for fifth in Major League Soccer with 11 goals on the year. Ebobisse has made 21 starts on the year and is leading his team as they play better soccer in recent days, with seven points in their last five games.
Ebobisse and San Jose recently matched up against
Thorleifur Ulfarsson and Houston Dynamo on July 17, with Ulfarsson scoring a goal in a win. The Kopavogur, Iceland, native has been hitting his stride in recent games, with three goals and an assist in his last seven games.
Sean Davis,
Sebastien Ibeagha and
Ian Murphy all have their sides in playoff picture as the second half of the MLS season forges on. Ibeagha and Los Angeles FC continue to lead the Western Conference and hold the most points in the league, putting them in contention for a CONCACAF Champions League berth. Ibeagha has played in 12 games this season, making 10 starts.
Davis has maintained his durability and poise with Nashville SC, who sit firmly in the playoff picture in sixth in the west. Davis tallied his first goal with the club on July 3, scoring an outside-the-box curler to win the league's AT&T 5G Goal of the Week honors. Murphy continues to play a big role with FC Cincinnati, making 12 starts over 18 games in his rookie season.
OVERSEAS
James Belshaw returns for another season with Bristol Rovers F.C., who are back in EFL League One after a one-year hiatus. Belshaw is coming off a career-year, with 17 clean sheets in League Two last season and will look to get his side off to a fast start against Forest Green Rovers to open the season on July 30.
Ciaran McKenna is set for a new challenge in the 2022-23 season, joining Scottish League One side Queen of the South on July 1. McKenna is off to a quick start with his new side, tallying two assists in four games to begin the 2022-23 Scottish League Cup, helping his side advance out of Group F. Queen of the South have advanced to the League Cup second round for the first time in four years and will face perennial Scottish powerhouse Rangers on Aug. 30 at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. McKenna and his side will open League One play against Clyde F.C., on July 30.
In Finland,
Macario Hing-Glover and HIFK are preparing for a big test on August 30, as his side faces FC Inter Turku in the Finnish Cup semifinals. The club has never won the prestigious national cup trophy and will vie for its first title, along with a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Hing-Glover tallied an assist in the quarterfinal win over PK-35 and has an additional goal and two assists in 15 Veikkausliiga games.
USL
Smooth sailing has continued for
Carter Manley and San Antonio FC, who lead the Western Conference with 49 points. After an injury hiatus, Manley has returned to play in the team's last three games, including a full 90 minutes in the wins over El Paso Locomotive FC and Las Vegas Lights FC.
Aedan Stanley and
Issa Rayyan have also assisted their clubs into potential playoff positions. Stanley has held down a starting left back role with Miami FC, registering his second assist in his most recent win over Loudon United. He has Miami FC sitting in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, six points ahead of FC Tulsa for the final playoff spot.
Rayyan has seen more action with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in recent days, making two starts in the last three games. Rayyan has now played in 14 games with his new club, as his side sits in third place in the Western Conference with 40 points.
In USL League One,
Will Pulisic continues to hold down the starting goaltender role while on loan with North Carolina FC. Pulisic has made 14 starts with his new club, with two clean sheets. North Carolina FC stands in 11th place with 18 points.
