GoDuke.com will highlight each swimming and diving signee in the class of 2022. Next up is diver Yannis Schattman of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
Yannis comes to Duke after a heralded high school career and club career. The Cortlandt, N.Y., native dove for Mike Darland at both Hendrick Hudson High School and his club diving program before moving to train at elite diving academy RipFest in Indiana. While at RipFest, Yannis trained tirelessly, while also balancing the rigorous demands of Laurel Springs online school. He is equally as active outside of the pool, volunteering his time in many different ways to help others.
He is the son of Sarantoula Pappas and Spencer Schattman and has three younger siblings.
Why Duke in one word? Culture
What is your favorite diving memory so far? Training a month last summer with the Greek national team at the Athens 2004 Olympic Stadium.
What is your pre-meet hype song? Stay Fly by Three 6 Mafia
Do you have any hidden talents? Driving stick shift (manual)
If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Gyros
Other fun facts? I swim a mean 100 breaststroke
