VANDOEUVRES, Switzerland – Duke women's golf rising senior
Erica Shepherd turned in a 3-1 record over three days of competition in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland, but the United States dropped a 33-27 decision to the International squad at the Golf Club de Geneve.
Shepherd, a native of Greenwood, Ind., opened the event with three straight wins to help position the United States with an 18-18 tie heading into Sunday's singles.
On Friday, Shepherd teamed with Sam Bennett in mixed fourball and put the first point on the board for the event by defeating Alexandra Forsterling and Ludvig Åberg, 1UP.
Shepherd then teamed with Rachel Heck on Saturday morning for foursomes. The pairing never trailed in their contest against Benedetta Moresco and Chiara Tamburlini, as the U.S. won 4&2 to put another point on the board.
On Saturday afternoon, Shepherd and Bennett teamed back up to face David Kitt and Lorna McClymont in mixed foursomes. The Internationals led for eight out of the first 11 holes, but Shepherd/Bennett came back on the final nine. After starting on hole No. 10, Shepherd/Bennett won No. 2 to tie the match and birdied No. 3 to take their first lead, but Kitt/McClymont responded with a birdie to win No. 4. Shepherd/Bennett won No. 6 and No. 7 to take a 2UP lead before closing the match with a birdie on No. 8 to win 2&1.
Shepherd went up against Alexandra Forsterling in Sunday's singles action, but the Duke two-time All-American managed only one birdie and dropped a 4&2 contest.
In two career appearances in the Arnold Palmer Cup, Shepherd has now collected an impressive 6-2 ledger. She helped the United States to the 33-27 victory a year ago.
It marked the fifth straight year Duke featured a golfer in the annual event as Jaravee Boonchant (2018), Ana Belac (2019), Gina Kim (2021, 2020) and Shepherd (2021) have all participated. Blue Devil head coach
Dan Brooks was the United States coach in 2020, while Duke associate head coach
Jon Whithaus was an assistant coach in 2021 as well.
