DURHAM – Duke held its first scrimmage of preseason fall camp Sunday night at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Â
The Blue Devils ran over 100 plays in addition to working on special teams and two-minute drills. After their 11th practice of the year, senior offensive lineman Jacob Monkand junior defensive back Jaylen Stinsonaddressed the media.
Â
"It was the first scrimmage of the year and it felt amazing to be out there," Monk said. "In some situations, it felt game-like, and I think our tempo was really good. Overall, it was balanced with both sides showing flashes."
Â
Monk headlines a veteran group along the offensive line that returns four starters from a year ago and has added three graduate student transfers.
Â
"We're coming together really well," Monk said when asked about his positional group. "We're making strides each and every day. We've got a big guy in Chance Lytle, who is really physical. Dre (Andre) Harris from Arkansas State is extremely light on his feet and athletic and then Jack Burns is physical as well. Pairing them with the guys we already had here and just continuing to grow us mentality to be the most physical unit on the field."
Â
Stinson has received preseason praise from numerous outlets, including Pro Football Network who named him a preseason All-American.
Â
"As of right now we're taking the right steps," Stinson said when asked about the growth of the team midway through preseason camp. "We're not where we want to be but we're heading in the right route. You can tell everyone is bought in and we're moving in the right direction toward the season opener."
Â
Duke continues its fall camp schedule in preparation for its season opener on Friday, Sept. 2 against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
