Wrapping Up Spring and Summer
- For the first time since the spring of 2019, the Blue Devils had a "normal" spring schedule. Duke was able to practice and train without any stoppages or restrictions and play in six games. It allowed them to build team chemistry and culture, while also getting stronger and faster in the weight room.
- Senior Josie Varney spent part of her spring season with the United States U-21 National Team at the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup in South Africa. Varney helped lead the U.S. to a 4-0 win over rival Canada to land a spot in the quarterfinals.
- Senior Hannah Miller was selected to the U.S. U-21 squad for the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament this summer in Dublin, Ireland. She was instrumental in leading the squad to the bronze medal. Miller finished the tournament with three goals, including two in a 3-2 victory over host Ireland.Β
What to Look For in 2022
- The Blue Devils feature a roster of 26 with nine of those being new to the program. Duke also bolstered the roster with three veterans as Kira Curland (Indiana) and Charlotte van Oirschot (Louisville) come in as a sophomore and junior respectively, while Raphaelle van de Walle is a graduate student from Eindhoven, Netherlands.
- Head coach Pam Bustin enters the 2022 season with 299 career victories. With one more win she will become the 40th NCAA field hockey coach across all three division to reach the benchmark and the 19th Division I head coach to do so. Bustin, 299-213, currently ranks 11th among active Division I coaches in career wins.
- Duke will feature a nearly all new backline following the graduation of Lexi Davidson, Caroline Hanan and Grace Kim. The Blue Devils return 10 players who played at least 10 games last season and four regular starters.
- Junior goaltender Piper Hampsch enters her third season in the cage with 161 career stops. She ranks 13th on the Duke career charts. Senior forward Hannah Miller is on pace to reach 50 career points. She needs six points to become the 42nd Blue Devil to the mid-century mark.
- Fans can catch the Blue Devils on ACC Network Sept. 23 against Boston College. First hit is set for 6 p.m., in Durham. Duke's other five contests all will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, available via the ESPN app or on ESPN.com/watch.
