DURHAM – The 2022 Premier Lacrosse League Playoffs presented by Cash App are set and the Blue Devils are well represented across six of the seven teams. Twelve former Duke stars have seen action in the PLL this summer and each has helped their teams earn a spot in the postseason event.
The playoffs get underway Sept. 3 in Boston and conclude with the championship game Sept. 18 in Philadelphia. The three first-round games can be seen on ESPN+, while the first of two semifinals Sept. 11 will air on ABC. The second semifinal will be shown on ESPN+. The championship game can be watched on ABC.
Brad Smith and
Justin Guterding have helped Whipsnakes to the top seed yet again. The two-time PLL Champions earned the bye in the opening round and won't play again until Sept. 11 against the winner between Atlas and Waterdogs.
In 10 games for Whipsnakes, Smith has 22 points from 13 goals, including one two-pointer, and eight assists. The 13 goals and 22 points are a career-high for Smith in his three seasons with the franchise.
Guterding, despite playing only seven games, has 16 points from six goals and 10 assists.
It is no coincidence that with the arrival of
JT Giles-Harris on defense, Chrome rebounded from last place in 2021 to the No. 2 seed. Paired with former Blue Devil and veteran defenseman
Michael Manley to defend the crease, Chrome allowed the second fewest goals in the league this summer. In 10 games this summer, the franchise gave up 13 fewer goals than it did in nine games in 2021.
Giles-Harris, drawing the opponent's top attackman every week, is widely considered a top candidate for the Dave Pietramala Defensive Player of the Year award. He has 11 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls to his name.
Manley, in his 11th season as a professional, is fourth in the league in caused turnovers with a career-best 13. Manley also has a goal and two assists. Haus bolsters the defense as a short stick middie, collecting 15 ground balls and scoring two goals.
Cade Van Raaphorst joins Giles-Harris and Manley as an elite defenseman. He ranks tied for eighth in the league in caused turnovers (10) and has picked up 25 ground balls. He also has three two-point tallies on the year, helping Atlas to the No. 4 seed.
Ranking fourth in the league with 21 goals,
Michael Sowers has played in nine games for the fifth-seeded Waterdogs. He finished his first full regular season with 21 goals and 11 assists.
Securing the No. 6 seed is Redwoods, featuring
Myles Jones,
Nakeie Montgomery and
Joe Robertson. Jones has 22 points in his 10 games to sit in a tie for 19th in the league. Montgomery, playing both ways in the midfield at times this season, has nine points in his rookie season. Robertson has been picked up for four games by the club, registering a goal and an assist.
CJ Costabile, one of the top LSMs in the PLL, leads the position group with nine points for the reigning PLL champ Chaos. He also has 29 ground balls and has won 13-of-25 at the faceoff dot. Costabile has won at every level he has played, helping Duke to the 2010 NCAA Championship, winning an MLL title and most recently the 2021 PLL crown with Chaos.
Resch has played in 10 games for Chaos as a defensive midfielder. He has four caused turnovers and 15 ground balls to go with a goal and an assist.
