DURHAM – The 17th-ranked Duke men's soccer team returned to the Koskinen Stadium field on Thursday evening, defeating Michigan by a score of 3-0 to move their record to 3-0 on the season. On the defensive end, goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill logged his third consecutive shutout while on the offensive end,
Axel Gudbjornsson headed home his second goal of the year alongsideÂ
Peter Stroud and
Luke Thomas scoring their first goals of the season.
How It Happened
- Both teams spent the first 30 minutes feeling out the other team, with both defenses holding strong and limiting the success for both teams.
- The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when defender Axel Gudbjornsson's header found the back of the net. The goal was the freshman's second on the season and was assisted by Felix Barajas.
- A quick start to the second frame saw the Blue Devils score their second goal of the contest less than 20 minutes into the half.
- Peter Stroud converted from the penalty spot to give Duke the 2-0 lead, picking up his first goal of the season.
- Luke Thomas joined the scoring effort just five minutes later when he logged his first goal of the 2022 campaign in the 68th minute via a cross from Cameron Kerr.
- The Duke defense held Michigan scoreless over the 90 minutes of action after allowing eight total shots by the Wolverines, including six in the second half.
Notes
- Peter Stroud's goal was his first of the 2022 season and his third from the penalty spot during his career as a Blue Devil.
- Axel Gudbjornsson scored his second goal in as many games and now has five points on the season just three games into his time in Durham. The freshman picked up a red card via a second yellow card in the 68th minute and will miss the Blue Devils' match against Louisville next week.
- Stroud and Antino Lopez both played the full 90 minutes, while Kamran Acito finished the contest having played all but two of available minutes.
- Eliot Hamill finished the game with a season-high for saves in a game with four saves, tallying his third shutout in as many attempts. He is halfway to matching his 2021 season's shutout total of six.
- The Blue Devils finished the game with a season-best .563 shot-on-goal percentage after putting nine of their 16 total attempts on net.
Quotes
- "Scoring that penalty to go two-nil up really changed that game obviously. Because now they had to push forward and we could have a little break and sit back. So that was massive. And then the third goal was even better. Down a man and we just go down on a break and get a goal. Awesome." – Duke junior midfielder Peter Stroud on the strong offensive effort in the second half.
- "Happy overall with the overall play with our guys and I feel that there's a lot more to come. We can kind of nail things down a bit better as we move forward to the ACC schedule." – Duke head coach John Kerr.
