NATCHITOCHES, La. – Former Duke women's basketball standout Alana Beard has been selected as one of 10 individuals to be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Along with Beard, the star-studded class includes Paul Byrd, Walter Davis, Wendell Davis, Matt Forte, Walter Imahara, Paul Mainieri, Eli Manning, Ron Washington and M.L. Woodruff.
The LSHOF's Class of 2023 will be enshrined Saturday, July 29, at the Hall of Fame's home in Natchitoches to culminate the 64th Induction Celebration July 27-29.
A phenomenal shooting guard at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, Beard was the 2000 Miss Basketball in Louisiana for Shreveport's Southwood High School. She led Southwood to four consecutive state titles from 1997-2000 with a 144-6 overall record (ending her career with 53 wins in a row), and the WBCA All-American scored 2,646 points before going to Duke.
Beard, Duke's all-time leading scorer with 2,687 points, was the first Duke women's basketball player to have her jersey retired, when her No. 20 was hung in the rafters in 2004. The 2001 National Freshman of the Year and two-time National Player of the Year (2003, 2004), Beard led the Blue Devils to four straight ACC titles and four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA Final Four (2002, 2003). The Frierson, La., native won the 2004 John R. Wooden Award as the nation's best college player, was a three-time ACC Player of the Year, three-time Kodak All-American and four-time Associated Press All-American.
Following her time at Duke, Beard was the No. 2 pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft and enjoyed a 15-year playing career with the Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks – highlighted by winning the 2016 WNBA Championship and back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards (2017, 2018). Beard, who retired from professional basketball in 2020 to enter the private sector, was a nine-time WNBA All-Defensive Team selection, four-time All-Star and a 2006 All-WNBA Second Team honoree.
Most recently, she has spent time over the last two years as an analyst on ACC Network.
