DURHAM β James Madison scored three second-half goals to come away with a 4-2 victory over 20th-ranked Duke in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium. The 21st-ranked Dukes got tallies from four different players in the victory.
The Blue Devils drop to 4-6 overall, while James Madison improves to 7-3. Duke outshot James Madison 17-8 and had a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners for the game.
How it Happened
- Duke controlled possession through much of the opening quarter with the majority of action coming in the middle third of the field. The Blue Devils took three shots in the first 15 minutes, forcing James Madison goaltender Brandelyn Heinbaugh to make three stops.
- JMU had a couple of chances in the opening half off a few Blue Devil turnovers, but Duke did well to recover in only allowing two shots in the first 30 minutes.
- James Madison broke through for the first goal in the 24th minute as Alice Roeper's shot on the penalty corner beat Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch.
- The Dukes carried that momentum into the third quarter, coming out on the front foot and scoring twice in the first nine minutes. The first of the two markers came from Emily Harrison as she deflected a shot off Hampsch and into the cage. The third and game winner came off the stick of Morgan Merritt. Eveline Zwager provided the impressive pass from the corner to make it 3-0.
- Duke responded with a sense of urgency in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to two when senior captain Hannah Miller knocked in a rebound off a save from Heinbaugh. Sophomore Logan Clouser had the initial shot off the penalty corner.
- James Madison's Zwager responded less than two minutes later, weaving through the Duke defense into the circle and hitting a shot under Hampsch to put the Dukes back ahead by three, 4-1.
- Issy Carey rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils, tipping in a rocket off the stick of Josephine Palde for her third goal of the season.
- Hampsch made two saves in 48 minutes of action, while Heinbaugh had six saves.

Notes
- Piper Hampsch made two saves to push her career total to 198. She needs two more to become the 10th Blue Devil goaltender to reach 200 career stops.
- All six of Duke's setbacks have come against top-20 programs and the Blue Devils have five more top 20 opponents remaining on the schedule.
Quotes
Overall impressions of the game
"I am very disappointed in today's match, particularly the way we came out in the first half and second half. Our discipline has been wavering and we're going to figure it out. We're really going to figure it out. We showed a good last half of the fourth quarter on Friday and our fourth quarter today was dominating and that's something this team can do from the start. So, we've got to figure out what's going on. We've had an incredible week of practice. I felt really good going into both games this weekend. Corners were sharp, communication was sharp, our energy was good, so we have to figure what is happening when the whistle blows at gametime." β

On what she said to the team before the fourth quarter
"I think it's important and hopefully I don't have to do that again where I remind them of the pride we have of wearing the Duke jersey and the pride we should feel stepping out onto this amazing facility and representing a university we love and provides so much for us. We need to keep that in the front of our brain. These kids usually do. It's just on gameday we have to make sure that's an added energy that we should be proud of."
On the fourth quarter
"That's the kind of energy and the kind of hockey we want to play. I'm not please we finished with two kids in the penalty box. That's something we've been working on too. We've got to learn to manage our aggression and not let it become overaggressive, but let it work for us."
On moving forward to next week
"I hope they realize they just need to compete and find a way. I think frustration is quite high at this moment. We're going to let them air it out a little bit and then get back to business to get ready for Wake [Forest]."
