LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Athletic Club has announced Duke freshman
Kyle Filipowski as one of 25 players named to the midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, presented by Wendy's.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2022-23 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor. Filipowski is one of three players on the midseason Top 25 that makes their debut on the Wooden Watch, joining Marcus Carr (Texas) and Gradey Dick (Kansas).
A native of Westtown, N.Y., Filipowski has 13 double-figure scoring games through 15 games played for Duke so far this season and has led the team in scoring seven times. On the boards, Filipowski has led the team in rebounds in eight games and has recorded six double-doubles. He started the season with three consecutive double-doubles, the first freshman in program history to do so. Filipowski was named ACC Rookie of the Week in four consecutive weeks to open the season (Nov. 14, Nov. 21, Nov. 28, Dec. 5), becoming the first player in ACC history to start a season with four consecutive Rookie of the Week honors.
The freshman center had a career day against Oregon State at the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament in late November, scoring a career-high 19 points while grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds in Duke's 54-51 victory over the Beavers.
Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2023 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
The award has been presented to a Duke men's basketball player six times in its 45-year history – the most by any program nationally. The Blue Devils' most recent winner was
